Triangle Borea BR05 Brings Back Big Woofer Bookshelf Speakers With Retro Style

Triangle’s Borea BR05 combines retro styling, an 8-inch woofer, and serious cabinet engineering. Who decided bookshelf speakers had to be so small?

2026 Triangle Borea BR05 Stand-mount Loudspeakers

French loudspeaker manufacturer Triangle is taking its popular Borea series back to an era when bookshelf speakers were anything but small. The new Borea BR05 is a generously proportioned, retro-inspired two-way standmount loudspeaker built around a substantial 21 cm (8-inch) midwoofer, combining old-school Hi-Fi styling with Triangle’s established approach to loudspeaker design.

Triangle is positioning the BR05 as an alternative for listeners who want some of the bass authority, dynamic scale, and room-filling presentation associated with floorstanding speakers without committing to a pair of towers. It’s an appealing proposition, particularly for anyone who remembers when bookshelf speakers had proper woofers instead of tiny drivers working overtime to convince us that physics had somehow changed.

Retro Style

The BR05 pairs a wood-toned cabinet with solid-color front panels and matching driver surrounds, creating a warm, contemporary two-tone appearance. Light Oak and Black Ash are joined by three additional finishes: Chestnut, Green, and Frosted White. Removable magnetic grilles let owners choose their preferred look.

A supplied base tilts the speaker back by 8° toward the listener to improve soundstage coherence while maintaining a discreet visual footprint. Alternatively, the optional S03 stands, available in Black or White, raise the BR05 to listening height. The 8° tilt is maintained in both configurations.

An 8-inch Midwoofer Brings Old School Muscle

At the heart of the Borea BR05 is a new 21 cm (8-inch) midwoofer developed specifically for this model. The driver focuses not only on low-frequency output but also on midrange quality, bringing greater musicality to the speaker’s sound reproduction.

The driver cone is made from 100% natural cellulose pulp, a material long associated with Triangle’s loudspeaker designs. The untreated paper cone is intended to give voices and instruments a sense of texture and presence, while its profile and dust cap are tuned to balance scale with finesse.

A re-engineered dust cap and suspension provide greater control to support deeper, tighter bass. The motor features a 120 mm (4.7-inch) ferrite magnet and a 40 mm (1.6-inch) voice coil, while a rigid, open basket promotes airflow and heat dissipation to help the BR05 remain composed during dynamic passages.

Tweeter

The Borea BR05 retains the 25 mm (1-inch) silk dome EFS (Efficient Flow System) tweeter used throughout the Borea series, complete with a phase plug. The driver sits within a shallow horn assembly designed to control directivity and improve high-frequency dispersion across a wider listening area.

The tweeter uses a compact but powerful neodymium magnet motor, coupled with a cooling system to improve power handling and thermal stability. Triangle designed the EFS tweeter to deliver precise imaging, a spacious soundstage, and detailed high-frequency reproduction. Its slightly warm character is intended to reveal subtle recording details without introducing harshness or listening fatigue.

MDF & DVAS

The BR05’s cabinet is engineered to allow its large 21 cm (8-inch) midwoofer to perform with minimal interference from unwanted vibrations. MDF panels up to 21 mm (0.83 inches) thick provide structural rigidity, while Triangle’s proprietary DVAS (Driver Vibration Absorption System) uses a high-density EVA foam gasket to connect the rear of the driver’s motor assembly to an internal brace.

This system is designed to absorb and dissipate mechanical energy, reducing the transmission of unwanted vibrations to the cabinet walls. Two additional internal braces further reinforce the enclosure and minimize resonance, helping the BR05 deliver cleaner, more natural, and dynamic sound reproduction.

Dual Ports

For additional low-frequency support, the Borea BR05 incorporates dual bass-reflex ports designed to distribute airflow across a larger area, reducing turbulence and port noise at higher listening levels for cleaner, more controlled bass. Both ports fire forward, making the BR05 less sensitive to placement near the rear wall and potentially easier to integrate into a typical listening room.

To integrate the tweeter and midwoofer, the BR05 uses a second-order crossover operating at 1.7 kHz with a 12 dB/octave slope. The crossover incorporates large-gauge air-core inductors, polyester film capacitors, and cement resistors, with high-purity oxygen-free copper (OFC) wiring, to promote a transparent, phase-coherent response. Bi-wire and bi-amp-compatible binding posts provide additional flexibility for system configuration.

The Bottom Line

Triangle is making a compelling case for bringing the big bookshelf speaker back with the Borea BR05, combining retro styling, a substantial 8-inch midwoofer, and some serious cabinet engineering for a proposed price below $1,000 per pair. What makes the BR05 interesting is that Triangle isn’t simply dressing up another compact standmount in vintage clothing. It’s targeting listeners who want the scale and authority of a larger loudspeaker without surrendering their living room to floorstanding towers.

The competition at this price is fierce. The Rotel Amora 5 ($999/pair) offers a more conventional approach with its 6.5-inch driver, while the Paradigm Premier 220B v2 ($1,099.98/pair) impressed us with its engineering, build quality, and performance. The Wharfedale Denton 1S ($999/pair) takes a different path with its coaxial driver design and British heritage styling. Triangle’s advantage could be its larger driver, distinctive appearance, and focus on delivering greater dynamic scale, although only listening tests will determine whether it can outperform these established rivals.

We’ve already spent considerable time with Triangle’s Borea lineup, and our BR03 versus BR04 comparison review demonstrated just how much the French manufacturer has improved the platform without sacrificing its value proposition. The BR05 looks like a logical next step for listeners who want a more substantial loudspeaker with some old-school personality. Whether it delivers on those ambitions remains to be heard, but it’s refreshing to see a manufacturer remember that not every bookshelf speaker needs to look like a shoebox with a tweeter. A little French engineering, some vintage attitude, and a proper woofer. What’s not to like?
