If you grew up in the 1980s or 1990s, Pioneer car audio was practically a status symbol. Glowing displays, cassette decks, graphic equalizers, and those unmistakable box speakers mounted on the rear parcel shelf were essential equipment for anyone driving a Camaro, BMW E30, Volkswagen GTI, or Japanese import with more ambition than horsepower. Your mixtape might have sounded terrible, but at least the car stereo looked spectacular. And if you were really lucky, nobody broke into your car to steal it.
Pioneer is bringing some of that nostalgia back with its new Heritage Collection, featuring the SXT-C10PS head unit and TS-X40SXT box speakers, both inspired by designs that helped define the golden age of aftermarket car audio. The receiver takes its styling cues from Pioneer’s classic KEH-series cassette decks, while the speakers revisit the distinctive Japanese surface-mount designs popularized by models such as the TS-X60 in 1984.
The idea is simple: give owners of classic cars something that looks like it belongs in their dashboard rather than a touchscreen that resembles an iPad installed by someone with double-sided tape and questionable judgment.
The collection makes its public U.S. debut at RADwood NorCal, where Pioneer serves as the Official Sound Partner. The event takes place Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Gold Bar Hangar in Alameda, California, celebrating the cars, music, fashion, and questionable hairstyles of the 1980s and 1990s.
It’s an appropriate setting for Pioneer to revisit its history, especially when restoring a period-correct interior has become almost as important as finding a surviving cassette copy of Licensed to Ill that hasn’t been eaten by the tape deck.
Modern Car Audio for ’80s and ’90s Classics, Without the Touchscreen Eyesore
Pioneer’s new Heritage Collection pairs a head unit and speakers aimed at owners of classic cars that helped define the 1980s and 1990s. The collection reimagines the styling of those decades for modern drivers, adding conveniences such as Bluetooth, HD Radio, and SiriusXM readiness while promising the rich, detailed sound that has made Pioneer a favorite among car audio enthusiasts.
Designed for owners who want to modernize their classic cars without compromising their original character, the SXT-C10PS head unit features a single-DIN, period-correct faceplate, while the TS-X40SXT speakers draw inspiration from the iconic Japanese box speakers of the era.
“For over 80 years, Pioneer has left its mark on car audio, and that history still runs through everything we build today,” said Larry Rougas, Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “With the Heritage Collection, we’re going back to our roots, the iconic designs that defined a generation of drivers, and pairing them with the technology those same drivers rely on now. Our goal was to make that history feel present again, not behind glass, but back on the road. There’s no better place to bring that to life than RADwood, which celebrates the cars, fashion, music, and pop culture of that special time in our brand’s history.”
“RADwood celebrates the cars and culture of the ‘80s and ‘90s, taking people back to a simpler time when pop-up headlights and neon ruled,” said Marc Burns, Chief Marketing Officer at Hagerty. “And now Pioneer is in on the fun with us, launching the Heritage collection that merges period-correct RAD design with the very latest technology.”
Pioneer SXT-C10PS Head Unit

The SXT-C10PS head unit combines a single-DIN design and interactive faceplate inspired by Pioneer’s classic KEH-series cassette receivers, bringing modern connectivity to a package that looks right at home in a vintage dashboard.
Bluetooth, HD Radio, SiriusXM readiness, and customizable EQ are included. Digital media playback through the USB port supports MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC (Hi-Res), and WAV (Hi-Res), giving owners of classic cars access to both standard and high-resolution audio files without compromising the period-correct appearance.
With a continuous power output of 22 watts per channel across four channels, the SXT-C10PS has enough muscle to provide a meaningful audio upgrade. And if that isn’t enough, it also features six-channel RCA preamp outputs for connecting external amplifiers and additional speakers. You’ll just need to find somewhere to install everything without sacrificing what little storage space your classic car already has.
Voice control and hands-free calling add everyday convenience, while the detachable faceplate provides an additional measure of security. For owners of 1980s and 1990s classics such as the BMW E30 and Porsche 911, whose lineage dates back to the 1960s, the SXT-C10PS offers a practical way to modernize the driving experience without installing something that looks like it belongs in a 2026 Tesla.

Pioneer TS-X40SXT Box Speaker

The TS-X40SXT speaker features a wire-mesh grille and dark silver finish inspired by the original TS-X60, introduced in 1984. Its retro styling conceals a modern, surface-mounted, three-way bass-reflex design that looks right at home in a classic car.
Deep-profile cellulose fiber cone woofers and a double-slit bass-reflex enclosure are designed to deliver full-bodied bass, while a cellulose fiber cone tweeter adds clarity and presence to the upper frequencies.
Whether you’re driving a Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI or another 1980s or 1990s classic, Pioneer’s Heritage Collection brings modern audio technology without sacrificing period-correct styling. The cassette decks may be gone, but the box speakers are back. And your rear parcel shelf can finally retire that faded tissue box.

The Bottom Line
Pioneer’s Heritage Collection isn’t trying to compete with the company’s more technologically ambitious Sphera head unit, which offers features such as Dolby Atmos and a large touchscreen. Instead, the SXT-C10PS delivers modern connectivity, Bluetooth streaming, USB audio playback, hands-free calling, and six-channel preamp outputs in a single-DIN design that won’t look completely out of place in a classic dashboard.
Pair it with the TS-X40SXT box speakers, and owners of 1980s and 1990s vehicles have an appealing way to upgrade their sound without sacrificing the character that made these cars desirable in the first place. Installation requirements will vary, of course, but preserving an original interior is a much better proposition than hacking apart a vintage dashboard to accommodate an oversized touchscreen.
And if you’re still attached to your old CDs or cassettes, the SXT-C10PS includes an auxiliary input for connecting compatible external players. Our guide to 10 Portable CD Players and coverage of the FiiO CP13 portable cassette player offer some possibilities.
You don’t need to trade your beloved E30, Golf GTI, or air-cooled Porsche for a modern EV just to enjoy better car audio. Pioneer has given classic-car enthusiasts a sensible way to bring their sound systems into the 21st century without turning the dashboard into a Best Buy display. Keep the pop-up headlights, the manual transmission, and the questionable ’80s mixtapes. Just leave the lousy factory sound system in the rearview mirror.
