Amphion’s One25A Active Studio Monitors Deliver One Hell of a Punch

Pro audio active loudspeakers don’t always make sense to a lot of audiophiles, but the Amphion One25A have us very intrigued.

Amphion One25A Active Studio Monitor Lifestyle

Finnish loudspeaker manufacturer Amphion, has successfully waded in both the consumer and pro audio pools for many years and it is definitely a brand that deserves more attention from North American audiophiles.

They have been busy in 2023 with the launch of the Krypton3X 3-Way Flagship Loudspeaker: Munich High-End 2023 and involved in a number of collaborations including this interesting one with architect Martin Hakiel.

Another loudspeaker made its debut at the NAMM Show, and HIGH END Munich 2023 but its pro audio slant most likely did not earn that much attention from audiophiles.

Amphion’s first 3-way active studio monitor, the One25A is now available for $14,000 USD and there is certainly some merit to checking these out if your budget for an amplifier and pair of loudspeakers extends to this level of price.

From Anssi Hyvönen, CEO of Amphion: “The development process of the One25A started in 2019. During this path, we left no stones unturned. This sort of crazy dedication makes no sense, but we feel that because it’s a statement product we needed to get it 100% right,…Our job is to create a large clean window into sound that allows people to experience sound in a manner they have not been able to do before,…All of this leads to a certain acoustic purity and immaterial feel that all Amphion products share.”

Features

Cabinet: The One25A 3-way active monitor (powered speaker) incorporates a sealed dual cabinet, which is designed both as a stiffening support structure and as a physical energy dispersion filter. It utilizes the mass of the sub-driver, and how it connects to the bracing structure to control the resonance of the whole enclosure to provide superior resolution and clarity.

Tweeter and Midrange: The One25A’s tweeter and midrange driver are placed in an isolated sealed chamber. This helps to minimize the woofer’s negative effects such as pressure changes. This supports high midrange and treble resolution for better transparency. The baffle around the midrange chamber is acoustically symmetrical which supports a smooth frequency curve and precise imaging.

Waveguide: The One25A also includes Amphion’s 5th generation waveguide and U/D/D (Uniformly Directive Diffusion). This supports driver integration, eliminating cabinet diffractions to produce a uniform, even response through a broad frequency band.

Crossover: The Crossover in the One25A incorporates a line-level passive design with FET buffers. This design also utilizes Amphion’s overload protection circuitry that is separate from the audio signal path. It remains inactive until limiting is needed to ensure maximum resolution and safe user operation.

Room Interaction: To support room tuning and soffit mounting a proprietary 8-step low-frequency adjustment boundary control (+/-7dB) is provided. The adjustment provides a smooth shelf-type curve mostly operating at frequencies below 150 Hz. This fine-tunes bass response when placing the One25A near boundaries (such as corners and walls).

Amplifier Placement: The amplifier is placed on the outside of the speaker portion of the enclosure in a sealed box. This reduces potential physical vibrations that can affect driver performance.
