Steinway Lyngdorf has introduced in-wall subwoofers to complement architectural speakers in its Steinway & Sons and Lyngdorf Audio lines. The passive in-wall woofer is being sold as the Steinway & Sons BWS-100 as well as the Lyngdorf Audio DW-1.
The two models are nearly identical with two slight differences. External branding identifies each model, and each has a different connector type. The Steinway model only works within a closed system with Steinway audio components. Alternatively, the Lyngdorf DW-1 connects via regular speaker cable which allows flexibility to connect third-party audio components as well as Lyngdorf’s own electronics.
The BWS-110 and DW-1 are high-performance in-wall woofers made for custom installations that require a shallow woofer solution. The enclosure is rigid and sealed and can be integrated into 4-inch/10 cm cavity walls, while the extended height provides the large inner cabinet volume required for effective bass extension.
Since in-wall woofers/subwoofers have to be rather thin, the limited depth requires a special high-performance driver. The BWS-110 and DW-1 utilize a patented high-excursion shallow woofer design that fits 4-inch/10 cm cavity walls customized and based on an innovative voice-coil cone geometry and suspension, which allows the highest excursion from the most space-saving construction.
The woofer driver is 10 inches in diameter and incorporates a four-layer voice coil, an ultra-rigid dual aluminum cone, a powerful neodymium magnet, and a rigid cast basket to provide impressive bass performance, achieving a high output level and low reach. The high-bandwidth design ensures an accurate, fast response and allows the most seamless sound integration with the main speakers.
The BWS-110 and DW-1 are designed to be an ideal subwoofer or woofer solution for home theaters, living rooms or media rooms with in-wall speaker systems. They’re also useful when there’s no space or desire to place in-room subwoofers. Just paint over their magnetically attached grilles and they’ll practically disappear in a room.
