ADTRAN Adds GPON to Market Leading Total Access 5000

FTTP Bolsters Applications for the Ethernet-based Total Access 5000 MSAP

HUNTSVILLE, AL, (April 2, 2008) ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) today announced the addition of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology to the Total Access 5000 Ethernet Multi-service Access and Aggregation Platform. The ADTRAN GPON module provides 2.5 Gbps to each optical line terminal (OLT) port, enabling the delivery of advanced, very high bandwidth services such as high definition IPTV. The multiservice capabilities of the Total Access 5000 allow for the support of native Ethernet services like GPON from the same platform used to support POTS, DSL, Bonded Copper, ATM and legacy copper services.

Service providers of all sizes are looking to fiber access technologies, like GPON, for ultra-bandwidth to residential customers as well as to provide high-speed Ethernet and voice services to businesses. The ADTRAN optical network terminals (ONTs) work in conjunction with the Total Access 5000 to support a wide range of applications for both residential and business applications, ranging from DS1 to Gigabit Ethernet. The ADTRAN Total Access 5000 also provides fully integrated voice options, including support for both TDM trunk interfaces as well as VoIP, eliminating the need for costly external solutions.

“With the addition of GPON, the Total Access 5000 has the industry’s most complete access service offering from an all Ethernet platform. This device spans a host of applications for both residential and business customers, including Ethernet over Copper/TDM, IP DSLAM, Broadband DLC, ATM aggregation and now FTTP using GPON,” said Teresa Mastrangelo, principal analyst and director of research, Broadband Trends. “Using the ADTRAN GPON solution, service providers will benefit from the high data rates of fiber optic transmission as well as the flexibility of an all Ethernet-based system that can be easily configured for new customized service offerings.”
“We are excited about ADTRAN’s FTTP solution,” said James Garner, vice president LEC Operations, Telephone Electronics Corporation. “The Total Access 5000 has been an excellent choice for our network because of the flexibility and wealth of applications it addresses. With the addition of GPON, we are able to increase our network efficiency even further as we offer fiber-based access solutions to complement our already deployed copper access solutions.”

“With the addition of GPON to the Total Access 5000, our customers can continue to benefit from the advantages of an end-to-end Ethernet architecture,” said Mike Martin, director of product management. ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. “ADTRAN is an active participant in the FSAN, contributing to the standards and working to ensure multi-vendor interoperability. We are pleased to deliver a standards-based GPON solution to market that matches the advanced capabilities and true Ethernet architecture of the Total Access 5000.”

The ADTRAN Total Access 5000 is a carrier class multi-service access and aggregation platform that bridges the gap between existing and the next-generation networks. Its highly scalable all Ethernet architecture allows providers to deploy multiple services, while optimizing a converged network architecture capable of meeting growing bandwidth requirements. Offering both copper and fiber-based access solutions, the Total Access 5000 is an ideal choice to deliver legacy or advanced services to both residential and business customers.

The ADTRAN GPON solution is currently shipping.
