The Devil Wears Prada 2 4K UHD Review: The Bitch Is Back 

Back in May, a bunch of us went to see The Devil Wears Prada 2, more for the social outing than anything else. Generous moviegoer that I am, I was the only one in our group who wasn’t complaining about it afterward. I thought it did a passable job of picking up where the first movie left off, delivering a few chuckles, callbacks, and interesting character developments while also keepin’ it real about the sorry state of print media over the past 20 years.

But when I started thinking about the details, it all began to unravel. The once-steely-eyed, razor-tongued Miranda (Meryl Streep) spends most of the movie on her back foot as she and her beloved Runway face major changes. Enter the unflappably plucky Andy (Anne Hathaway), thick skin and journalistic acumen intact, although the duo’s combative dynamic now feels more scripted than earned.

With the exception of Stanley Tucci’s ever-loyal Nigel, all of the men in this movie are treated as props—there to advance a plot point, try and fail to create romantic tension, or simply fill space in the female characters’ lives. Particularly egregious is Justin Theroux’s wildly annoying, one-note performance as Emily Blunt’s rich asshole boyfriend, which is cringe-inducing every time he appears on screen. I can only assume that he, like all of the returning players, took home a substantial paycheck to ease the pain.

In terms of picture and sound quality, there are no real complaints, although this is hardly challenging material. The clothing provides a colorful parade of individual costume choices and what I presume are actual examples of runway fashion. These high-powered fashionistas, wearing every imaginable style of makeup, are rendered in a wide array of subtle shades. In 4K, some faces are understandably photographed more softly than others.

The Ultra HD disc features a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, while the included Blu-ray offers DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1. A helicopter flyover in one scene is nothing to write home about, although this is hardly meant to be Black Hawk Down. Theodore Shapiro’s serviceable score trots dutifully alongside the dialogue-driven story, while Lady Gaga’s “live” performance late in the movie delivers above-average dynamics.

The 4K disc includes an audio commentary from director David Frankel, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, and costume designer Molly Rogers, each bringing a distinct perspective to the production. Three featurettes explore the costumes, the location shooting in Italy, and the enduring appeal of the cherished 2006 original. We also get a gag reel—yes, even the great Meryl Streep can make a mistake—plus a Lady Gaga and Doechii music video presented in lossy Dolby Digital stereo.

Working from an original screenplay rather than directly adapting Lauren Weisberger’s follow-up novel, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, the filmmakers behind The Devil Wears Prada 2 seem intent on giving fans more of what they loved about the original. Ultimately, they kind of succeed, but also kind of don’t.
