Sony announced two new wireless earbuds today as part of its LinkBuds lineup at $199 each, and a LinkBuds portable speaker for $179. But what does a speaker have to do with LinkBuds? More on that later.
The LinkBuds wireless earbud line launched in 2022 with the goal of connecting the online and offline world with products that could be worn all the time. The first LinkBuds used an open-ear ring driver that lets outside sounds in, and the new LinkBuds Open slightly modify the previous design while maintaining that same open concept. Meanwhile, the new LinkBuds Fit close off the opening but use external microphones to bring outside sounds in.
Optional new Air Fitting Supporters sold separately for an extra $10 help maintain a secure fit. These Supporters have a tail that is soft and hollow to reduce ear contact, pressure, and prevent accidental dislodging, especially when exercising. Also extra are Case Covers for LinkBuds at $20 each in multiple colors.

LinkBuds Open
The new Sony LinkBuds Open feature an open-ring design that keeps users connected to the outside world while enjoying their favorite music. A newly developed 11mm open ring driver at the center of the diaphragm always maintains audio transparency.
LinkBuds Open feature Adaptive Volume Control, a smart feature that automatically optimizes the volume based on where users are. Listeners can enjoy lower volumes in quiet places and higher volumes in nosier places.

New Sound Connect App
LinkBuds Fit and LinkBuds Open are compatible with the renewed Sound Connect app. By using this app, users can personalize the earbuds by adjusting various settings such as the equalizer. The simple interface lets listeners dial in their ideal sound and shortcut settings and can even keep track of their recent listening history to encourage healthy listening habits. When activated, Background Music Effect uses DSP to make audio sound as though it’s playing in user’s own space, rather than feeling like it’s localized – perfect for users are multitasking or want something a little less intense.
LinkBuds Speaker
The LinkBuds speaker does have us puzzled. It’s basically an accessory for LinkBuds earbuds, so users can switch audio seamlessly between earbuds and speaker. It also functions as a speakerphone for taking calls. But if someone is already wearing LinkBuds, then why would they use the speaker, unless it sounds better?
We’re guessing it’s for when a friend comes over or joins you at the pool or the beach and you want to share your music. But this seems like a fairly limited use case. Of course, the LinkBuds Speaker can be used like any other Bluetooth speaker, if you don’t have a pair of Sony’s earbuds. Just pair it to your phone and let the music play out loud.
According to Sony its Quick Access feature lets users enjoy one touch listening and Auto Play plays music according to their routine, for an even smoother experience. For calls, Sony further states it communicates the clearest audio of any Sony wireless speaker and uses echo cancellation.
Additional LinkBuds Speaker Features:
- A handy, detachable strap lets users take the LinkBuds Speaker wherever they go, whether that’s into another room or to the kitchen. Plus, it’s dedicated charging cradle ensure convenient charging.
- With an IPX4 water-resistance rating, listeners can use it around water without worrying about splashes. Just don’t drop it in the pool.
- Up to 25 hours of battery life with quick charging can keep the music going all day long.

Sony is also continuing its collaboration with three-time Grammy-winning, multi-Platinum-selling, singer/songwriter Olivia Rodrigo on the LinkBuds earbuds as part of Sony’s For The Music audio campaign. Following a successful collaboration on the LinkBuds S last year, LinkBuds Fit and LinkBuds Open are also available in Olivia’s signature violet color.
