The new James by Sonance SA68 is the flagship model in the brand’s Small Aperture series of in-wall and in-ceiling architectural speakers. It features an innovative design that hides the bulk of the speaker within the wall or ceiling, leaving only a discreet grille visible—delivering high-performance audio with minimal visual footprint.

What is a Small Aperture Speaker?

A speaker aperture refers to the opening in the cabinet through which sound is projected into a room, typically represented by the size of the driver.

However, when a speaker system is designed to deliver powerful sound with minimal visual impact, such as in-wall or in-ceiling installations, a smaller driver assembly is required. This results in a smaller aperture through which sound escapes the enclosure. These specially designed systems are known as “small aperture” speakers.

James Small Aperture speakers and subwoofers are engineered for premium performance, utilizing proprietary woofer and driver technology to produce sound from openings as small as 3″, 4″, 7″, or 8.5″.

Tip: Sonance acquired James Loudspeakers in 2019, expanding its portfolio in the luxury custom installation market.

The SA68

The James SA68 is engineered to deliver exceptional audio performance while maintaining its discreet, minimalist aesthetic.

As the flagship of the James Small Aperture lineup, the SA68 is designed to seamlessly blend into any room or space without compromising on visual appeal or sound performance. The company claims it surpasses even the most demanding acoustic expectations, all while maintaining aesthetic integrity.

The SA68 features an integrated ultra-high-fidelity 6.5″ woofer and a 2″ full-range module, both crafted from exclusive thin ply carbon material. This advanced construction technique allows the SA68 to improve over its predecessor, the SA63. The company claims the SA68 produces deeper, punchier bass and articulate, natural sound across the full frequency range.

The thin ply carbon material, typically reserved for high-end engineering applications, ensures stronger, more controlled drivers while maintaining optimal weight and geometry for precise sound reproduction.

The SA68 features marine-grade construction standards within an aircraft-grade aluminum enclosure, ensuring durability and reliability. It also incorporates CDX Crossover technology, delivering broad, uniform coverage.

Users can choose from 3″ or 4″ round or square grilles, available in eight standard finishes at no additional cost.

For further customization, options include center and offset opening modifications, module spacers, various grille sizes and trims, 70/100 Volt compatibility, and marine-grade enhancements.

The Bottom Line

Speakers designed for ceiling and wall installations are built differently than traditional, stand-alone models. To address this, companies have developed various solutions and we like the innovation James Loudspeaker brings to the market. It seems they’ve solved the problem of how to get big sound from speakers that look small.

Price & Availability

James by Sonance SA68 Small Aperature Speakers are sold individually through authorized dealers and installers, but we’re still waiting to get word on their price.

    “Big sound from tiny opening.”

There’s a pill you can take for that problem.

    Awkward title, gentlemen.

The CI space has definitely evolved.

      Anton,

Indeed you can. Yes — the CI space has evolved and there are many in-wall/in-ceiling speakers that I prefer over the more traditional models from the same brands. Theory Audio Design, Focal, DALI, and KEF are making some superb products. I plan on ordering a few for the cabin and new home in Florida. When you don’t have the space — these make a lot of sense.
