In a plea deal with a federal court in San Francisco, LCD manufacturers Chunghwa, LG and Sharp have agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to drive up the prices of LCD displays used in everything from computers and televisions to mobile phones and gaming devices. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the companies engaged in communications to fix the prices of TF-LCD displays during periods ranging from early 2001 through the end of 2006. The companies allegedly held "crystal" meeting in which they set pre-determined prices for the displays and issued price quotes to manufacturers like Apple, Dell, and Motorola based on those meetings. The companies are also alleged to have exchanged sales information in oder to monitor and enforRead | Permalink | Linking Blogs

The Tweet Text of Terror

A report by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, summarized in a presentation (PDF) available from the Federation of American Scientists identifies ways terrorists might exploit commercially available hardware and software to coordinate and carry out their strikes. The report focuses on some obvious ideas: use of satellite GPS positioning and mapping systems along with the use of voice-modification software to obscure identities on calls that might be monitored by military or intelligence organizations. And that isn't really news: for years, intelligence analysts have been pointing the use of everything from laser pointer to radio-contrRead | Permalink | Linking Blogs

The monitor represents the first member of a new P-series of MultiSync monitors from NEC."Built upon the success of the 90 Series displays, the new MultiSync P Series has featuRead | Permalink | Linking Blogs

Senator Urges Google, Yahoo Deal Monitoring

Senator Herb Kohl (D. Wisconsin) is the head of the Senate's antitrust committee, and while he's not actually coming out against an imminent link-up between Internet giants Google and Yahoo, he is urging the U.S. Justice Department to commit to monitoring the deal if it is approved. Under the arrangement—which Google and Yahoo are looking to launch very shortly—Google will be able to sell advertising on a number of high-traffic Yahoo sites. In his warning, Kohl notes that the amount of advertising Yahoo outsources to Google could be a threat to competition in the online advertising market."We conclude that important competitionRead | Permalink | Linking Blogs
