Vertical turntables are not new, and the Ruka Studio TD-1 is hardly the first record player to decide that gravity should be part of the engineering brief. Pro-Ject explored the concept with the VT-E and Bluetooth-equipped VT-E BT, and Fuse Audio continues to sell more affordable vertical record players. Vertical Grooves still offers the Gramovox-derived Floating Record, and Miniot has taken the idea considerably further with its rather ambitious Wheel 3, which can operate flat, upright on a stand, or mounted on a wall.
And none of them can claim to have started the party. More than four decades ago, Sharp was cramming a vertical, linear-tracking record player capable of playing both sides of an LP into the wonderfully excessive VZ-2000 boombox. The concept has been around for a very long time; it has just never convinced the broader turntable market to stand up with it.
That makes the new Ruka Studio TD-1 less of a revolution and more of a distinctly Los Angeles interpretation of an old idea. The $1,399 wall-mounted turntable combines an intentionally minimalist industrial design with both pure analog and wireless playback, while Ruka says its system automatically maintains the selected cartridge tracking force during vertical operation.
The real question, therefore, isn’t whether a vertical turntable can work. We settled that argument decades ago. It’s whether Ruka has finally designed one that audiophiles will want to listen to as much as everyone else will want to stare at.
The TD-1 is engineered for both wireless and wired hi-fi listening. Whether used with Bluetooth speakers or connected to a traditional hi-fi system, the TD-1 is designed to provide an enjoyable listening experience without taking up much space.
The TD-1 uses a belt-drive system that helps isolate motor vibration from the platter for quieter, smoother playback. A built-in level helps ensure proper installation, while the rubber-coated mounting plate is designed to reduce vibration and noise. The TD-1 attaches magnetically and clicks securely into place.
Its body is machined from aluminum, which provides greater rigidity and resistance to flexing, warping, and wear compared with wood or plastic.
Vertical by Design, Surprisingly Simple to Set Up
The TD-1 is designed for straightforward setup using the included wall mount or one of the optional stands. The mounting bracket installs directly onto the wall, and the TD-1 simply clicks into place. Once powered on, the turntable self-calibrates the pre-installed cartridge. According to Ruka Studio, the entire process takes only a few minutes.
When it is time to play a record, a magnetic clamp pulls the LP securely into position in one motion. Users enter the recommended tracking force for the cartridge, and the TD-1 handles the rest. It automatically applies and maintains that force during playback, allowing the cartridge to track within the same safe operating range vertically as it would on a conventional horizontal turntable.
The TD-1 also accepts interchangeable headshells, allowing owners to use different cartridges. Once a new cartridge is installed, the turntable recalibrates the tracking force for the stylus being used. Before shipping, buyers will also be able to select their preferred cartridge at no additional charge.
Installation is not limited to the wall. The TD-1 can also be used with an optional floor stand or placed on a tabletop, giving owners considerably more flexibility when integrating it into a listening space.
Records can be played through a traditional audio system using a wired connection or streamed wirelessly to compatible Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

The Bottom Line
The Ruka Studio TD-1 is not trying to beat conventional $1,400 turntables at their own game. Its appeal is the vertical industrial design, flexible wall, stand, or tabletop placement, interchangeable headshells, automatic tracking-force calibration, and wired or Bluetooth playback. What is missing is any evidence, at least for now, that it delivers superior sonic performance for the money. Buyers focused primarily on sound quality have plenty of established horizontal turntables at this price or less, including several with Bluetooth support.
The TD-1 is for someone who wants vinyl playback to become part of the room rather than another component sitting on a rack. At $1,399, you are paying for engineering, space efficiency, and design as much as you are for the turntable itself. And in the right room, that may be exactly the point.
