5 In-Ceiling Home Theater Speakers Reviewed

In-ceiling Speakers

As the demand for home theaters and surround sound systems touches an all-time high, home ceiling speakers have become a popular home theater choice among music and movie lovers alike. In-ceiling speakers deliver better sound quality without compromising on bulky floor space. All the wiring is run behind the walls in such a manner that you won’t even notice the speaker placement in the room. The wiring goes from the sound unit to the back of the speaker for an unobtrusive visual experience.

Polk Audio RC80i 2-Way In-Ceiling Speaker Review

Polk Audio RC80i 2-Way In-Ceiling Speaker

The Polk Audio RC80i 2-way in-ceiling loudspeaker is easy to install. All you need to do is cut a hole, put the wires through the hole, and simply place the speaker inside. The large 8″ opening that cut in the ceiling makes it a breeze to fish the speaker wire.

Once you put the speaker in, it is held in place securely by rotating cams with no extra assembly or mess. As it comes with a paintable grille and flange, you can make this in-ceiling speaker virtually disappear in the room. Though while installing, we noticed that the speaker grill was pretty hard to remove. This is not a big deal considering that you only have to do it once.

The 8-inch dynamic-balance, mineral filled polymer-composite cone with a rubber surround employed by this home theater speaker outlasts cheaper foam surrounds. The one-inch metalized soft dome tweeter with a 15-degree swivel mount can easily pivot to aim at your listening position, ensuring spacious imaging with crystal clarity.

Coming to the anatomy, Polk Audio RC80i is made of rust resistant hardware and durable, moisture resistant materials. This makes it safe for use in bathrooms, saunas, kitchens or even under outdoor eaves.

Spectrum Cinema Home Theater In-Ceiling Speaker

Spectrum Cinema Home Theater In-Ceiling Speaker

The Spectrum Cinema In-Ceiling Speaker is the best way to completely fill your room with sound, and to drown yourself in the experience of your movie or music. With their impeccable ultra-low profile design, it’s easy to forget that the speakers are even in the room.

Perfect for Left/Center/Right and surround positions, this speaker distributes sound cleanly and evenly from above, and is the most discreet way to install a complete home theater system. It installs easily and securely, completely flush with ceiling.

Being a surround sound speaker which can be completely flush-mounted overhead, not only does it integrate seamlessly into any room, but it distributes sound more evenly around your space. The music pours in from over your head, spreading to every corner of your home theater without obstruction, creating an environment of complete immersion.

Yamaha NS-IW280CWH 6.5″ 3-Way In-Ceiling Speaker

Yamaha NS-IW280CWH 6.5" 3-Way In-Ceiling Speaker

The construction quality of Yamaha NS-IW280CWH In-Ceiling Speaker is top-notch and the installation is very easy via the drywall saw and the template provided with the purchase.

Note that the actual hole you make in your ceiling while installing the speaker is 10 inches: the woofer is 6.5 inches with the two tweeters in front of it, which are adjustable to point in the direction you listen the most. As the woofer is angled and positioned within its casing, the good thing is that it can also be aligned in your listening direction.

Not only that, these speakers also have a white grill to cover the speaker. However, when installing the grill, you need to make sure not to force it and that all edges of the circle go in evenly. Otherwise, you run the risk of bending the grill. Speaker installation takes 30-45 minutes per speaker.

While these speakers are a good buy for your surround sound needs, but I won’t recommend using them as front speakers. Being too small, they don’t produce enough sound on the lower end.

Bose Virtually Invisible 791 in-ceiling speakers

Bose Virtually Invisible 791 in-ceiling speakers

Designed to complement home theater systems for audio enjoyment, the Bose Virtually Invisible 791 in-ceiling speakers come with a flush design for attractive mounting and easy placement.

Four clamp screws secure each speaker perfectly to the ceiling. The infinite baffle design makes a separate speaker enclosure unnecessary, using the space above the ceiling instead. As you are done with positioning the speakers, all left to be done is tightening the clamp screws and twisting the grilles into place.

These speakers consist of one 7-inch woofer and dual 1-inch tweeters in order to provide a wide range of clear sound, and less distortion or vibration. The tweeters are strategically positioned in such a way that you don’t need to aim the speakers into the room. The end result is balanced sound delivered at all parts of the room.

And as with other home theater ceiling speakers in this list, you can paint the speaker grilles to match your décor. The ability of these flush-mount speakers to blend in your home will amaze you. As the name implies, these are virtually invisible with excellent surround sound.

Pyle PDIC60 In-Ceiling Dual 6.5-Inch Speaker System

Pyle PDIC60 In-Ceiling Dual 6.5-Inch Speaker System

With decent bass, clear highs and solid midrange, this 2 way in-ceiling speaker produces great stereo sound in any room. The sound quality is great for a good 3D video experience and general music listening with reasonable base and treble.

Each unit is 6.5″ round shaped with 1″ high temperature voice cone and directable 1″ titanium dome tweeter.

These speakers require a moderately precise round hole. But once the hole is complete, they install easily and securely. All you need is a good screw driver and a box cutter to cut the circle holes in the ceiling.  All the pieces for the speaker are in the box.

The hooks that flip around to hold in drywall are good quality, as are the good connectors for wires to run into.

That’s It

When you buy the best quality in ceiling speakers, you can expect a superior music-listening or movie-watching experience as part of a surround sound home theatre assuming the home ceiling speakers were installed correctly.
