Offering Patented Design For Exceptional Metro/Urban/Suburban Off-Air Digital Reception, Including Fringe Locations

GSSI/Toptronics and Antennas Direct announced today the roll-out of the new DA-001 indoor antenna with a patented element and low noise amplifier designed for digital signal reception. The DA-001 is smaller (12″X8″X13″), more powerful and better looking and was designed to receive both VHF and UHF signals (channels 2 to 69). The DA-001 was designed and patented in conjunction with Antennas Direct for the best in digital/HD Off-Air reception. It works exceptionally well with both the new digital ATSC TV tuner chips and old analog NTSC TV tuner chip. The built-in special low noise Amplifier was computer designed by Toptronics using advanced digital signal generating software to match the reception elements for extended reception up to 50 miles and farther, depending on location and obstructions, for all local analog, digital and HDTV broadcasts in the Frequency Range of 55~862 MHz. Yagi and rabbit ears have technology roots going back 30 to 50 years or more and are not sophisticated enough to deal with digital reception.

Jerry Scarborough, President GSSI, part of the US Toptronics Group said “In our conversations with Broadcast stations, Converter box and HDTV manufactures, we saw a need for a better designed indoor Off-Air digital antenna. The old UHF/VHF antennas (“Rabbit Ears”) and most of the antennas on the market today, advertised as “HD Ready”, have relied on updated and outdated analogue technology to try to capture digital signals. There have been article’s written saying old “Rabbit Ears” will work. They will, if you’re close enough to the Broadcast tower without line-of-sight obstructions and then, you still might not get all the stations available.”

However, it is unlikely that the 75% of viewers now using indoor Off-Air antennas will get all of the digital broadcast signals available using an older antenna. Unlike the sine wave analogue signal, digital signals are harder to capture. With analogue, you could receive a signal even if it was weak. With Digital and HD signals, you have to capture all of the digital signal data to get a picture.

Richard Schneider, President of Antennas Direct said “The switch to digital broadcasts is bringing consumers back to Off-Air antennas and our increasing sales are providing the motivation and investments capital necessary to develop new models and new technology like the DA-001. Most antenna designs on the market now were developed prior to the advent of much of the computer technology, software and algorithms we use today. These new tools provided us the means to improve upon tried and true designs and design completely new ones.”

All broadcast signal reception depend on the strength of the broadcast signal, distance from the tower, weather, terrain, obstructions, design of the antenna and the installation process. All of these can affect the quality of received TV pictures and sound. If an analog signal is weak, the result is usually a snowy or distorted picture. With digital signals, you either have a great viewable picture or no picture at all. And Multi-path (bounced signals) makes digital reception by older antennas very difficult, especially in metro/urban locations.

Cable and satellite program providers will continue to serve the great majority of homes as the primary signal source, but missing HD local reception, compression issues effecting picture quality, higher costs, billing add-ons, service outages, contact difficulties, in-home service waits and no shows have left many subscribers looking to OTA antennas as alternatives and backup. OTA antennas receive local stations, including multi-cast programming adding several additional local off-air programs. Some viewers may even be able to receive out-of-town channels, carrying blacked out sports programs or network broadcasts not available in their home town.
