Sony Ericsson M608c Slim Phone Announced for Chinese Market

Beijing, ChinaSony Ericsson today announces the M608c phone and messaging device. This is a fully-specified mobile phone and email tool in an extremely stylish, slim device featuring a touch screen and Chinese character handwriting recognition.

With a stylish, handy design M608c is a great combination of mobile phone and PDA based on new symbian OS 9.1 and UIQ 3.0andoffers users great customisation opportunities as well as the ability to buy personal productivity and other applications from the Sony Ericsson Application shop. New push email applications, remote synchronisation and expandable memory give owners a phone and email connectivity in a device that easily fits in their pocket – at just 15mm thick, it is one of the slimmest devices of its kind available. The M608c is a 2.5G version of Sony Ericsson’s recently announced global products, the M600 UMTS handset.

‘M608c is tailor made for China and comes from a strong global portfolio of UMTS products that Sony Ericsson has now put in place in readiness for the eventual introduction of 3G services,’ said Gunilla Nordstrom, Corporate Vice President of Sony Ericsson and President of Sony Ericsson China.

‘China is the single largest market for Sony Ericsson and a strategic base for global business success. We have established the sole in-house global manufacturing base in China. Our investment in R & D enabled us to develop product like Z530 in China, for China and for the world. M608c is another example that further demonstrates our strong commitment to the China market,’ she said.

The ergonomic design of the M608c makes it easy to operate with one hand or two and gives versatile options on how to perform messaging tasks. For example the combination of large dual function keyboard and touch screen handwriting input makes messaging input extremely easy. Reading emails and viewing high quality video and graphics content is made easy with the 3-way Jog Dial and a 2.6′ QVGA screen, capable of handling 262K colours.

A range of standard and proprietary push email applications enabled for operator customisation are being developed in conjunction with a number of partners. These include but not limited to:

  • BlackBerry Connect
  • Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
  • Standard Email – IMAP IDLE working on all standards compliant servers

For such a slim device the M608C has an impressive 80MB onboard memory for storing email attachments and multimedia content. An additional 64MB Memory Stick Microa¢ (M2a¢), which is a new ultra-small recording media designed for highly compact mobile devices, is provided in the box. The M608c is the first Sony Ericsson product to feature this new memory card.

The M608C is available in Granite Black and Crystal White and starts shipping during Q3 2006.
