NOTE: This is the fourth article in a series about Samsung’s 2022 TV offerings. Please refer to the following articles for additional reference:

Samsung is the world’s largest TV manufacturer so when they reveal new models and pricing — competitors, retailers, and consumers take notice.

A lot was revealed at the 2022 CES, but since then, additional details are being revealed.

Samsung’s TV range includes QLED, Neo-QLED, MicroLED, and 2022 will mark Samsung’s first entry into QD-OLED.

Tip: Sony will also be releasing two QD-OLED TV models in 2022.

Samsung is continuing with its LCD-based QLED and NeoQLED TV line-up and continues to push 8K. In addition, Samsung is continuing its commitment to MicroLED TV tech.

Samsung TV Display Tech Tips

A “QLED TV” or “Neo QLED TV” is an LCD TV with LED or miniLED backlighting plus a layer of Quantum Dots to improve color. “Mini LEDs”  are LED light bulbs that are much smaller than standard LED light bulbs used in LCD TVs, providing more precise control of the light passing through the pixels.

Many consumers also confuse QLED and Neo QLED TVs with OLED TVs. However, they are not the same. An OLED TV uses Organic LEDs which are self-emitting (no blacklight required). Also, all brands of OLED TVs use screen panels made by LG Display Company – but add their own video processing enhancements. Samsung is excepted to add OLED TVs to their 2022 product line but details have not been released yet.

In addition to the TV technologies discussed above Samsung is also releasing a new model series for 2022 using QD-OLED TV technology. What makes these TVs different is that they combine self-emitting OLED pixels with Quantum Dots to create the images you see on the screen. However, on their official product pages, Samsung refers to these TVs as OLED TVs.

Dolby Atmos and Gaming

Before listing some of the specific models, here are some added features not discussed in our previous CES 2022 report that will be available on select Samsung 2022 model year TVs.

Dolby Atmos Decoding: Samsung’s flagship QN900B 8K TV has a built-in 6.2.4-channel speaker system with 90W and up-firing speakers for Dolby Atmos. Select Samsung 2022 TVs will also be able to send Dolby Atmos wirelessly to compatible Samsung Soundbars. The TV speakers can also be used in combination with compatible soundbars (from Samsung) via its Object Tracking Sound Pro system.

Samsung HDR10+

No Dolby Vision: Although Samsung has embraced Dolby Atmos, it still won’t be including support for the Dolby Vision HDR video format, to the disappointment of many. Samsung 2022 TVs will continue support for HDR10, HDR10+ Adaptive, and HLG. HDR10+ has also been extended to include gaming features, called HDR0+ Gaming

HDMI 2.1 Gaming Features: Select Samsung TVs will provide 4 HDMI 2.1 ports for 4K at up to 144fps or 120fps as well as VRR (variable refresh rate) and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. A compatible Game Console or PC is required to get the full benefit of this capability.

Models and Screen Sizes

Prices will be filled in as they become available. Prices may vary due to promotion, retailer, or other market conditions.

If the model number is highlighted you can click on it and view that model’s official Samsung product page complete feature/specification details. The TVs can be pre-ordered/purchased directly from Samsung or spotlighted retailers.

Samsung’s TV model numbers by category for 2022 are:

MicroLED

2022 Samsung MicroLED TV Lifestyle

As discussed in our CES 2022 report, Samsung is offering (or planning to offer) three microLED TV screen sizes for 2022. The prices quoted are tentative at this point.

  • 89-inches ($80,000)
  • 99-inches (TBA)
  • 110-inches ($100,000)

Some added features not discussed in our previous report include:

Art Mode: This feature allows you to use a Samsung MicroLED TV in a similar manner as its Frame TV models. With their large wall-sized screens, you can turn any room into an art gallery. As a bonus, two artwork pieces from noted artist and designer Refik Anadol are included.

Multi-View: Similar to other select Samsung TVs, you can display up to four images on a MicroLED TV at the same time in quadrant fashion, only each quadrant will be as large as a typical TV screen.

Dolby Atmos: Since Samsung’s MicroLED TVs are so large you need a sound experience to match. Samsung comes to the rescue by including top, side, and bottom speakers to deliver Dolby Atmos and immersive sound mixing that fills the screen and the room.

Other Samsung TVs for 2022

It is also expected that Samsung will be offering lower-priced Crystal UHD TVs in a variety of screen sizes, as well as a line of OLED TVs. This is in addition to its planned QD-OLED TV introduction mentioned previously. For its standard OLED TV models, Samsung is buying the OLED panels from the LG Display Company (sister company to LG Electronics).

When more details regarding models and prices for Samsung’s Crystal UHD and OLED TVs become available they will be added to this article.

I own a curved Samnsung 55″ 4k model because it reminds me of Todd-AO. Yup, I am olde…

I have owned it for over 5 years now and it still works just fine, displaying my UHD discs as well as HD and on down the resolution line more than well enough. Laser discs up-converted do not look as good as they did on my old, long gone 27″ Sony XBR CRT but that is to be expected.

There is some 4k out there via Disney+ and others and if it is some thing I want to watch I will tune it. But 8k?

Not yet. It really is not needed and what is next? 16k? 32k? The same is true with surround codecs. The majority of films I enjoy are from the 40s through the 80s and of those only that last decade may have what are termed “Action” films.

I sit maybe 6 or so feet from my screen and yesterday looked at a few current 65″ models and just do not see the need. The “want” is barely there too. It is like my turntable situation. I already have enough to satisfy my ego and needs.

    Maybe. So far. Who knows?
