Ottawa, ON and San Francisco, CA May 6, 2008 Protecode¥ Inc., a technology company that focuses on software Bill of Materials (BOM) management and Intellectual Property (IP) determination, will demonstrate the Beta release of its preventative IP management solution at JavaOne 2008 (May 6-9th) in San Francisco, California. A fully functional beta version will be offered directly from the company’s website at no cost. The software is a plug-in development tool that unobtrusively creates a BOM list and manages IP by detecting and logging 100% of content entering a software project, and checking its IP attributes against specific policies.

With the beta version comes several product enhancements; these updates are designed to allow automated tracking of source and binary pieces of code, open source or commercial, that enter any project. These improvements enable open source creators to create and publish pedigree information effortlessly and help developers to accelerate managed adoption of open source code. Below is a list of key product enhancements now included in the beta release.

X Support for Eclipse’s C Development Tool (CDT); now both Java and C/C++ are supported.

X Administration is now streamlined with an enhanced GUI, complete with online help. Project primes can now enter the admin site, create a user ID and password, define a policy, and assign it to developers (Protecoders) or a particular project in a simple operation.

X The Global Intellectual Property (GIPS) database has been significantly enlarged with millions of source lines and binary files.

X Enhanced reporting format with interactive features.

X Nested IP is now supported, allowing users to look back many generations in external content.

–more–
X Enterprise Adapter (EA) functionality is added in this release. Users can point the EA to any branch of their repository; the EA will then try to identify and create a pedigree record for everything in that trunk.

Protecode’s new product is unique because most IP management tools on the market are corrective solutions which only come into use after developers have finished their software projects and are performing due diligence, said Dr. Lutz Tischendorf, CTO, Contraco Service Ltd., an internet search solution provider for T-Online, Germany’s largest ISP and internet portal. The ability to see, at a glance, the pieces in a software project, and their IP attributes, along with its extreme ease of setup and use, make the Protecode software an immense value to the software quality development process.

Identifying licensing attributes has become increasingly important in the development process as people are constantly looking for ways to manage open source and other third party software in their projects, said Mahshad Koohgoli, CEO, Protecode. With this release, Protecode allows a wider range of open source developers to publish pedigreed software, and enables commercial developers to track the external content and manage the licensing attributes of all open source components in their project.

Protecode logs, identifies and reports pedigree and licensing information associated with external content in any stage of software development projects. Protecode automatically creates a software BOM, and manages compliance with organization’s IP policies, offering a clean pedigree that insures that developers/contributors are using licenses accurately. Protecoding (coding with Protecode plug-in as part of the development environment to ensure software pedigree tracking) frees developers from manual record keeping and interpreting open source rules and licenses.

Protecode will showcase the beta version of its technology at Java One 2008 (Booth #1224-10) on May 6th-9th in San Francisco, California.
