Intel Centrino Pro Processors Announced

Intel Centrino Pro Gives IT Managers Wireless Management and Security Capabilities

Under a new brand called Intel Centrino Pro processor technology, Intel Corporation today announced it will extend its innovative and popular features designed for desktop business PCs called Intel vPro™ processor technology into its forthcoming high-performance laptop offering. IT departments will be able to reliably manage both desktops and notebooks and deal with what plagues them most — security threats, cost of ownership, resource allocation, and asset management — and do so wirelessly.

“Intel Centrino Pro processor technology brings the best of our offering with Intel vPro processor technology and adds it right into our highly successful Intel Centrino brand for laptops,” said Mooly Eden, vice president of Intel Mobile Products Group. “This is an ideal time for this product as we continue to see notebook penetration rates increasing in business.”

With Intel Centrino Pro processor technology, IT managers will be able to manage and protect their notebooks over Wi-Fi. In addition, administrators can manage both wired notebooks and desktop PCs regardless of their power state or the health of the PC(3). The result is better protected PCs, increased IT department compliance, more accurate PC inventories, fewer desk-side visits and less interruption to business.

Major Companies Already Deploying vPro

Businesses have quickly recognized the significant potential time and cost savings from the manageability features of Intel vPro processor technology, and are rapidly deploying the technology. More than 200 business deployments are underway worldwide, ranging from the thousands to tens of thousands of PCs per customer including 3M(1), BMW(1), FujiFilm(1), ING(1), Johns Hopkins(1), Pioneer(1) and Verizon(1). Many of these customers will add Intel Centrino Pro processor technology to their deployments when it is available later this year.

There is broad industry corporate software support for Intel Centrino Pro processor technology with software applications and solutions being offered from such companies as Altiris(1), CA Inc.(1), Cisco(1), Credant Technologies(1), Hitachi JP1(1), HP(1), Microsoft(1), LANDesk(1) and Trend Micro(1).

Intel Centrino Pro processor technology will be available in the second quarter this year as part of the company’s planned introduction of the next generation Centrino processor technology code named ‘Santa Rosa.’ Both business and consumer notebook users will benefit from the highly acclaimed Core 2 Duo processors, which are at the heart of the platform. The latest versions offer higher performance while also delivering outstanding energy efficiency and battery life.

A new wireless component, Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N will give users more freedom to do more, farther away from their access points with support for the draft 802.11n specification delivering up to five times the performance(2) and twice the wireless range(2). Users will also enjoy improved graphics performance and support for Microsoft Windows Vista’s latest graphic interface Aero(1). In addition, the optional Intel Turbo Memory means users can experience up to two times faster performance when loading frequently-used applications, and up to a 20 percent faster boot time.(4)

Actual results may vary based on your specific hardware, connection rate, site conditions, and software configurations. See for more information. Also requires a Connect with Intel Centrino processor technology certified wireless n access point. Wireless n access points without the Connect with Intel Centrino processor technology identifier may require additional firmware for increased performance results. Check with your PC and access point manufacturer for details.

(3) Intel Active Management Technology requires the platform to have an Intel AMT-enabled chipset, network hardware and software, as well as connection with a power source and a corporate network connection. With regards to notebooks, Intel AMT may not be available or certain capabilities may be limited over a host OS-based VPN or when connecting wirelessly, on battery power, sleeping, hibernating or powered off. (4) Tests run on customer reference boards and preproduction latest generation Intel Centrino processor technology with optional Intel Turbo Memory enabled against like systems without Intel Turbo Memory. Results may vary based on hardware, software and overall system configuration. All tests and ratings reflect the approximate performance of Intel products as measured by those tests. All testing was done on Microsoft(1) Vista(1) Ultimate (build 6000). Application load and runtime acceleration depend on Vista(1)’s preference to pre-load those applications into the Microsoft(1) ReadyBoost(1) cache. See for more information.
