Acoustic Signature has spent 30 years building some of Germany’s most substantial turntables, including models capable of making both your equipment rack and retirement account buckle. The new Merlin NEO takes a slightly more restrained approach, although “entry level” at Acoustic Signature still means a 33 pound belt drive turntable machined from aluminum and priced at $4,999 USD (€3,998) with a tonearm.
Nobody in Süssen appears interested in competing with a plastic Bluetooth deck from Amazon.
Introduced as part of Acoustic Signature’s 30th anniversary product lineup at High End Vienna 2026, the Merlin NEO replaces the original Merlin from 2016 and becomes the least expensive turntable in the company’s current NEO range.

A Complete Turntable and Tonearm Package
The Merlin NEO is available only as a package with Acoustic Signature’s TA-500 NEO 9-inch tonearm and an AudioQuest Golden Gate phono cable.
A cartridge is not included, so buyers still have one more potentially expensive decision to make before playing anything.
The package contains the turntable, external motor, power supply, tonearm, counterweights, anti-skating weight, drive belt, platter mat, setup tools and phono cable. Black and silver anodized finishes are available.
This is not a stripped down lifestyle product carrying the Acoustic Signature badge. The Merlin NEO uses scaled versions of several technologies found throughout the company’s considerably more expensive turntables.
Almost 13 Pounds of Platter Should Settle Things Down
The Merlin NEO uses an anodized aluminum platter measuring 300mm across and 34mm thick. It weighs 5.8kg, or 12.8 pounds, before anyone places a record on it.
The complete turntable weighs 15kg, or approximately 33 pounds, and rests on three height adjustable aluminum feet with gel damping. Three point leveling should also make setup less irritating than chasing a fourth adjustable foot around an uneven equipment rack.
Acoustic Signature’s engineering approach is based on mass, mechanical isolation and controlled damping.
Its Constraint Layer Damping construction combines an aluminum chassis with a bitumen damped aluminum platter to reduce stored energy and unwanted resonance. That is almost the exact opposite of the ultra lightweight approach used by Rega. There is no single universally accepted way to build a great turntable. Audiophiles would have considerably less to argue about if there were.
External Motor With Automatic Vibration Control
The AC motor and digital control electronics are housed inside a separate aluminum motor block rather than being mounted directly to the turntable chassis.
Physically separating the motor helps reduce the amount of vibration that can reach the platter, bearing, tonearm and cartridge. Acoustic Signature also incorporates its Level 1 Automatic Vibration Control system, which is designed to reduce unwanted motor vibration electronically.
The crystal stabilized controller supports 33⅓ and 45 rpm playback, electronic speed selection and fine speed adjustment.
The Merlin NEO does not support 78 rpm records. Those with a large shellac collection will have to keep another turntable around, which is how equipment racks become real estate developments.
Dura Turn Diamond Bearing
The platter rotates on Acoustic Signature’s maintenance free Dura Turn Diamond bearing.
The bearing uses a diamond coated spindle designed to provide an extremely rigid and low friction point of rotation. It is one of the company’s foundation technologies, alongside Automatic Vibration Control and Constraint Layer Damping.
A heavy platter is only useful when the bearing underneath it can support the additional mass while maintaining quiet and stable rotation. The Merlin NEO’s combination of platter mass, an external motor and the diamond coated bearing is what separates it from many less expensive belt drive designs.
TA-500 NEO Tonearm
The supplied TA-500 NEO is a 9-inch tonearm with a dual layer carbon fiber armtube, stainless steel axis and precision ball bearings.
Effective mass is rated at 10 grams, making it suitable for a broad range of moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. Vertical tracking angle, azimuth, tracking force and anti-skating are adjustable, providing considerably more cartridge setup flexibility than many plug and play designs.
The included counterweights support cartridges weighing between 6 and 16 grams, with an additional weight supplied for heavier models.
This matters because the Merlin NEO is clearly designed to accept better cartridges over time rather than forcing owners to replace the entire turntable when upgrade fever returns.
What Makes the Acoustic Signature Merlin NEO Unique?
There are numerous excellent turntables around $5,000, but very few combine all of the following in one package:
- 5.8 kg machined aluminum platter
- Separate AC motor and digital controller
- Active motor vibration management
- Maintenance free diamond coated bearing
- Carbon fiber tonearm with VTA and azimuth adjustment
- In-house German manufacturing
- 15 year registered turntable warranty
Acoustic Signature offers a 15 year warranty on registered turntables and five years on registered tonearms manufactured since October 2020. Registration must be completed after purchase, and the extended coverage applies to the original owner in the country where the product was purchased.
A long warranty is not exciting in the same way that a 12.8 pound platter is exciting, but it may be the specification that matters most in 2040.
The Competition
Technics SL-1300G
The Technics SL-1300G is the most obvious competitor and sells for $3,999.99 in the United States.
It includes Technics’ coreless direct drive motor, Delta Sigma Drive motor control, three layer platter, substantial vibration damping, 9-inch aluminum tonearm and dustcover. Neither the Technics nor the Acoustic Signature includes a cartridge.
The Technics offers nearly instantaneous startup, 78 rpm playback, removable headshell convenience and exceptionally precise direct drive speed control.
The Merlin NEO counters with a heavier platter, separate motor housing, carbon fiber tonearm, broader cartridge adjustment and a substantially longer registered warranty. This is the real fight at the price: Japanese direct drive precision against German belt drive mass and isolation.
Rega Planar 8
The Rega Planar 8 currently sells for $3,395 without a cartridge and includes its RB880 tonearm and Neo power supply.
Rega takes almost the exact opposite engineering approach. The Planar 8 weighs only 4.2kg and uses an ultra lightweight skeletal foam core plinth, double bracing and a triple layer glass platter.
The Rega is lighter, simpler and includes a removable dustcover. Its RB880 is an excellent tonearm, but cartridge adjustment is less flexible than it is with the TA-500 NEO.
Listeners who prioritize minimal mass, immediacy and setup simplicity may prefer the Rega. Those who want high mass construction, broader cartridge compatibility and a more substantial mechanical foundation may lean toward the Merlin NEO.
Dr. Feickert Volare
The Dr. Feickert Volare is another German belt drive alternative and currently starts at $3,995 without a tonearm, with configured packages climbing higher depending on the selected arm.
The Volare is the more modular option. Its interchangeable armboard allows buyers to select from multiple 9 and 10-inch tonearms rather than accepting one supplied configuration. The Merlin NEO is the more integrated package, with its arm, bearing, motor and damping systems designed and supplied as one complete product.
Clearaudio Concept Signature
The U.S. market Clearaudio Concept Signature is another German rival at $5,000 with the Tracer carbon fiber tonearm.
Clearaudio places greater emphasis on easier setup and a more compact design. The Merlin NEO is considerably heavier and leans harder into platter mass, motor separation and long term cartridge experimentation.
The Clearaudio is the easier proposition. The Acoustic Signature is the more mechanically ambitious one.
U.S. Pricing & Availability
The Acoustic Signature Merlin NEO with TA-500 NEO tonearm and AudioQuest phono cable is priced at $4,999 USD (€3,998 in Europe).
The turntable is also expected to reach the United States through Rutherford Audio, Acoustic Signature’s North American distributor. Rutherford has already announced the Merlin NEO on its U.S. website as part of the company’s 30th anniversary launch, strongly indicating that North American distribution is planned.
The turntable is coming. The invoice is still hiding behind the curtain.
The Bottom Line
The Acoustic Signature Merlin NEO enters one of the most competitive sections of the high end turntable market. Technics offers direct drive accuracy and easier operation. Rega provides an ultra lightweight design built around simplicity and minimal stored energy. Dr. Feickert delivers greater tonearm flexibility, while Clearaudio offers a more compact and approachable path into German analog playback.
The Merlin NEO distinguishes itself through its substantial platter, external motor, active vibration control, diamond coated bearing, highly adjustable carbon fiber tonearm and unusually long warranty.
At $4,999, it is not remotely affordable for the average vinyl listener.
For Acoustic Signature, however, this is apparently how the peasants enter the castle and get their first taste of the strudel.

Hmmmmm…Kinda sorta attractive in the same way a few vertical phonographs have been in the past. Alas that I cannot bring myself to buy a V-T as I am incredibly clumsy and prone to falling and would doubtless break one. The same goes for this oddly attractive ‘table.
I really want the Pro-Ject Elvis Edition but that will just have to wait for me to save up for it! The Peanuts was more “affordable” at $800.
I am awaiting delivery of my Pro-Ject Peanuts 75th Anniversary BlooToof ‘table. Our grandchildren shall learn all the more the pleasure of listening to vinyl. It is their Birthright, after all!

Underrated tables, but I’d stick with Clearaudio if you must have something “pure” from Germany. Herr Tuchy is a really sharp and decent guy who has done well to not ruin the father’s legacy. He’s young enough that he knows he needs a new base and the tables he introduced at Vienna were a good start.
He’s also obsessed with engineering and building tables that last a very long time. They can be slightly cool sounding (very German), but put a warmer sounding cart on the arm and we have wundebar for days.
