Onkyo and Klipsch Expand Dirac Partnership But What Does That Mean For Consumers?

Software based acoustic room correction technology from Dirac is arriving in Onkyo AVRs and Klipsch soundbars, but could cost extra.

Onkyo and Klipsch are expanding their collaboration with Dirac, which specializes in acoustic room correction software. Onkyo’s latest range of A/V Receivers (TX-RZ30, TX-RZ50, TX-RZ70) come with Dirac Live Room Correction Full Bandwidth installed, while support for Dirac Live Bass Control is coming soon for an extra $299 charge. In addition, Klipsch will be introducing the world’s first soundbar with Dirac, the Klipsch Flexus Core 300 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar later this year.

The confusing part for consumers is that sometimes Dirac comes pre-installed free with purchase, while other times it can incur a one-time license fee (per product) from $99 to $599. In addition, there are limited (20Hz-500Hz) and full bandwidth (20Hz-20kHz) versions of Dirac Live Room Correction which function differently. Meanwhile, the Dirac Live Bass Control (when available) license fee costs an additional $299 (per product).

Tip: Check Dirac’s website to see which licenses are available for all supported products.

From Vincent Bonacorsi, COO of Premium Audio Company (PAC): “Dirac proves that the world’s best room correction software is not just for audiophiles. It’s for everyone,…Onkyo has built an exceptional reputation by bringing high-performance audio products with advanced technologies to a mass market at affordable prices. Our Dirac partnership and collaboration began years ago with Dirac Live Room Correction. It has since expanded to include its award-winning Dirac Live Bass Control, which is now available in many of our models. Dirac’s quest to improve audio playback with its famed room correction technologies continues to set our products apart from the crowd. As their technologies continue to expand, we are creating an even better listening experience for our customers together.”

What does Dirac Live Room Correction do?

Dirac Live is a room correction solution that is designed to automatically address common acoustic issues that hardware adjustments alone can’t address – or it takes too much time, expertise, or cost to fix.

Dirac Live corrects both the magnitude and phase of a sound system including the room. This results in a more transparent, balanced sound, tighter bass, improved staging, and enhanced clarity.

Dirac Live is typically managed through the Dirac Live Room Correction App for iOS and Android

In addition, a separate product, Dirac Live Bass Control addresses variations between listening positions, allowing for smooth, even bass distribution throughout a room – and deeper, punchier bass irrespective of the position of the subwoofers.

From Fredric Tapper, Dirac’s Vice President, Home & Pro Audio: “Dirac and Onkyo share a deep commitment to creating premium, high-quality audio for the many, not just the few. And it’s this shared commitment that has resulted in a successful collaboration these past few years. We look forward to strengthening and deepening our partnership with Onkyo to continue to push the boundaries of audio through premium hardware and industry-leading room correction software.”
