ADTRAN Expands Industry-Leading Total Access Series With New Carrier-Class VoIP Integrated Access Devices

SIP-Based Total Access 900 Series Enables Cost-Effective Delivery of VoIP to Legacy and IP Phone Systems

ADTRAN, the market-leader for packet/IP and TDM-based Integrated Access Devices (IADs), today announced a new family of Total Access IADs, the Total Accessµ 900 Series. These customer premises-based products allow Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs) and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) to implement a cost-effective IP network architecture for Voice over IP (VoIP) deployment, while supporting customers¡ legacy equipment.

“Integrated IP voice and data transport is becoming commonplace. Yet, a recent In-Stat business survey found over 40% of SMEs and 29% of small businesses favor hybrid TDM/IP voice solutions. TDM voice applications are not going away anytime soon,” said Keith Nissan, Sr. Analyst, In-Stat. “ADTRAN’s Total Access 900 Series products are perfect for this changing environment, allowing customers to take advantage of the benefits of VoIP, while transitioning from TDM to IP at their own rate.”

Using Total Access 900 Series products, carriers can migrate to VoIP architecture today, while providing new, competitive, revenue-producing services. These products are ideal for hosted PBX or IP Centrex applications, and can be used as a SIP gateway to overlay additional services to customers. Features such as dynamic bandwidth allocation and G.711 and G.729a voice compression technology allow carriers to save on backhaul costs. This provides the opportunity for enterprise customers to take advantage of increased features and cost savings as a result of VoIP implementation, while providing the option to maintain existing legacy infrastructure, implement a gradual IP migration, or select a complete overhaul of their network.

“With the adoption of VoIP applications, these products are the next logical extension of our market-leading Total Access Series of Integrated Access Devices,” said Tim Saunders, vice president of product management, ADTRAN Enterprise Networks Division. “Our customers have requested a product line that combines the best in functionality and reliability while remaining cost-effective. These carrier-class devices make migrating to next generation services, such as VoIP, a cost-effective proposition for both the carrier and its customers.”

Total Access 900 Series products also have the capability to act as a registrar for IP phones and as a Back-to-Back User Agent (B2BUA) to facilitate remote survivability and Network Address Translation (NAT) traversal. In the event of a service interruption on the Wide Area Network (WAN) or if the carrier’s feature server were to become unavailable, these features allow calls to continue between IP-based or analog phones at the customer premises.

These devices offer a single T1 port for WAN connectivity, a single 10/100Base-T Ethernet port and a single DSX-1 port. The Ethernet port can be used to connect Power over Ethernet switches, such as ADTRAN’s NetVanta 1224ST PoE, to network a variety of devices and personal computers, as well as to power IP phones and wireless access points, while the DSX-1 port is used for PBX connectivity. Total Access 900 Series IADs are also equipped to support up to 24 analog voice connections.

These are the first IADs to incorporate the ADTRAN Operating System (AOS), allowing for ease of use and enhanced management capability. The AOS provides a common platform for ADTRAN’s internetworking devices, including NetVanta switches and switch-routers, VPN/firewall devices, and NetVanta access routers, which hold the number two position for marketshare for SMB access routers. AOS provides feature-rich, standards-based, IP routing functionality including stateful inspection firewall, Network Address Translation (NAT), and support for BGP, OSPF, and RIP routing protocols. Using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for VoIP applications Total Access 900 Series platforms are interoperable with industry-leading softswitches and feature servers. These products feature a familiar Command Line Interface (CLI) and a user-friendly Web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI), allowing for ease of configuration. Remote management of these devices is available using ADTRAN’s n-Command network management productivity suite.

The Total Access 900 Series brings added benefit to the customer with 24×7 toll-free technical support, free firmware updates, and industry-leading 10year warranties. This product series currently consists of the Total Access 912, 916, and 924, offering 12, 16, or 24 fixed FXS ports, respectively. These devices are currently shipping and are priced as follows: Total Access 912 – $1,450 (list), Total Access 916 – $1,575 (list), and Total Access 924 – $1,825 (list).
