The True Wireless Earphones category is getting rather heated this summer and that has nothing to do with the scorching heat over parts of the United States at the moment. The Sennheiser CX True Wireless Earphones are going to be a major PITA for Sony, Apple, and Bose if they can deliver a better sonic experience. Based on Sennheiser’s most recent earphones, we think these might be the ones to beat in 2021.
The CX True Wireless features Sennheiser’s proprietary TrueResponse transducer, designed and manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Germany. Developed for Sennheiser’s premium earphones, this bespoke acoustic system is designed to “deliver high-fidelity stereo sound with deeper bass response, a more natural sounding midrange, and clear, detailed treble.”
The Sennheiser CX True Wireless Earphones feature an improved battery life which is reported to be 9 hours and up to 27 hours when charging on the go with the supplied case.
Our experience so far with a number of True Wireless Earphones from Sony, Jaybird, Master & Dynamic and others illustrates that the specs don’t always match the real-world performance. Expect less and be happy when the actual battery life comes very close to the marketing claims. Sad but true.
For a perfect fit in the ear canal that keeps the earbuds securely in place and effectively attenuates outside noise, ear adapters are provided in four sizes which is a great addition to the package. The earphones’ IPX4 water resistance rating is excellent but below what is offered by the Jaybird Vista 2 that we just favorably reviewed.
The Sennheiser CX True Wireless features an intuitive touch interface. Users can update the earphones through firmware updates, and make the touch controls customisable, letting the listener define their preferred way of handling audio, calls or accessing voice assistants such as Google Assistant or Siri.
The charging case is also intuitive, with the earbuds automatically powering on when taken out of the case and powering down to save energy when replaced in the charging case.
The Smart Control app controls the the earphones with a built-in EQ which allows for custom tailoring of the listening experience, allowing users to boost the intensity of the music with the Bass Boost preset, or tailor the frequency response of the earphones to improve phone call quality.
Connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.2 compatibility and SBC, AAC, and aptX audio codec support for high-quality wireless sound and management of Bluetooth connections via the Smart Control app.
The Sennheiser CX True Wireless Earphones will be available July 8, 2021 in white or black for $129.95
