Being able to spot trouble before it occurs is always a good thing. Airplanes have instruments that inform the pilot of altitude, attitude and even the proximity of other aircrafts. Cars have gauges that alert the driver if the vehicle is low on fuel or oil, if the engine is overheating, and nowadays even if tires are low on air. Weather stations have instrumentation that can spot severe storms many miles away, often saving entire towns.
The builders of computers have instituted trouble warnings as well. Pop-up messages warn of hardware problems, utilities such as Windows Task Manager allow monitoring of performance, application resource usage and networks, and other utilities exist to monitor and warn of other problems.
Unfortunately, there is no native utility to warn of file fragmentation levels on hard drives showing danger of decreasing disk performance and even the risk of hard drive failure.
