Monoprice has been very active in the speaker and subwoofer category in the past several months with a number of new product introductions under their Mononlith brand (see links at the end of this article).
It also looks like they aren’t stopping as they have announced the M-IWSUB8 and M-IWSUB82 Subwoofers.
What makes these subwoofers different is that they are designed for in-wall installation. Although it takes a little more work to make sure you place them in the right spot before you cut into your walls, they eliminate the need to find floor space for traditional subwoofer boxes.
However, it’s also important to note that, unlike most subwoofers, these subwoofers are passive. This means you have to place an external subwoofer amplifier between the subwoofer output of a home theater receiver and the input connections on the subwoofer as they don’t have their own built-in amps – more on this at the end of the article.

Subwoofer Amplifier
As mentioned at the top of the article, to use these subwoofers, you need to connect an external subwoofer amplifier. You can use almost any available subwoofer amp that is compatible with 4 ohm impedance speaker loads, but Monoprice also offers its own; the SWA-400 (400 watts output with DSP and presets to optimize performance with 8, 10, or 12-inch in-wall subs) which is priced at $308.99 on Monoprice.com.
Tip: If you are using more than one in-wall subwoofer, you will need a separate amp for each one.
