Audio-Technica has raised the bar for open-back headphones with the introduction of the ATH-ADX7000 True Open-Air model, the new flagship of its acclaimed ADX line. Designed and handcrafted in Japan, the ATH-ADX7000 leverages over 60 years of transducer expertise and features Audio-Technica’s proprietary High-Concentricity X (Transfer) Dynamic Transducer (HXDT) technology, delivering precise, natural sound reproduction from design to final integration.
Following in the footsteps of the ATH-ADX5000 ($2,199) and ATH-ADX3000 ($1,099), which our UK Headphone Columnist James Fiorucci tested at CanJam London 2025, the ADX7000 takes open-back performance further. Its True Open-Air Audio design precisely controls airflow and relies solely on diaphragm movement, allowing unrestricted air movement through the housing. This reduces internal pressure and resonance, producing a clear, natural, and fatigue-free listening experience — even during extended sessions.
Audio-Technica has long earned praise for its extensive range of phono cartridges and affordable turntables, but in 2025 and beyond, the spotlight is shifting to its expanding lineup of high-end headphones. The Japanese manufacturer has already shown it can produce one of the most expensive headphone amplifiers ever offered, signaling a serious push into the premium headphone market.

ATH-ADX7000 Open-Air Headphones: HXDT Drivers and Precision Engineering
At the core of the ATH-ADX7000 is Audio-Technica’s High-Concentricity X (Transfer) Dynamic Transducer (HXDT) technology. This process uses a controlled molding and alignment method to ensure that each diaphragm, baffle plate, magnet, and voice coil is perfectly concentric, with tolerances tightened to ±0.02 mm — nearly ten times more precise than conventional designs. The result is a diaphragm that moves consistently and freely, producing accurate transients, improved microdetail, and a cleaner, more natural sound.
The driver also features an updated voice coil with a 490-ohm impedance, which increases mechanical force without adding weight. This allows for more defined low frequencies, a wider dynamic range, and consistent clarity across the spectrum. The precise alignment of all components is central to the ADX7000’s performance, supporting the True Open-Air design to achieve balanced and open sound reproduction.

Key Features:
- High-Concentricity X (Transfer) Dynamic Transducer (HXDT): Manufacturing process for precise, consistent diaphragm movement.
- True Open-Air Audio: Controls airflow and relies solely on diaphragm movement for sound reproduction.
- Core Mount Technology: Balances acoustic impedance of front and back cavities for symmetrical diaphragm motion at all frequencies.
- Featherlight Design: Honeycomb aluminium housings reduce weight to 275g.
- Magnesium Die-Cast Frame: Provides structural strength and absorbs vibration to limit coloration.
- Two Earpad Options: High-density velvet pads for acoustic filtering or Alcantara pads for durability and comfort.
- Made in Japan: Every component is designed and assembled in Japan for consistent build quality.
- Accessories: Includes balanced XLR and unbalanced 6.3 mm cables with Neutrik connectors, gold-tipped A2DC connectors, and a compact carrying case.

This combination of HXDT technology, open-air design, and precise engineering positions the ATH-ADX7000 as a carefully considered high-end headphone for detailed, natural listening.
While Audio-Technica has not released full specifications for the ATH-ADX7000, we can draw some reasonable expectations based on the previous ATH-ADX5000. The ADX5000 features a relatively high impedance of 420 ohms, a sensitivity rating of 100 dB/mW, and a frequency response spanning 5 to 50,000 Hz. It’s likely the ADX7000 will sit in a similar range, potentially requiring 700 to 1,000 mW to be driven to its full potential.
Despite these higher power requirements, the ADX7000 remains remarkably lightweight at 275 grams, only 5 grams heavier than the ADX5000, which is notable given the premium materials and construction. This balance of manageable weight and high-end engineering helps ensure extended listening sessions remain comfortable while maintaining the performance expected from a flagship open-air design.

The Bottom Line
The Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 will be available worldwide starting October 23, 2025, with a retail price of $4,000. The optional AT-HPC3 storage case, compatible with other high-end headphones, is priced at $100. This positions the ADX7000 above the Sennheiser HD800s in price, below the Meze Audio Empyrean II, and in the same range as premium planar magnetic models from Audeze and HiFiMAN. With its lightweight 275g build, open-air design, and HXDT drivers, the ATH-ADX7000 combines precise Japanese engineering with competitive flagship performance.
