Astell&Kern has added a new Black finish to its PD10 digital audio player, giving fans another stylish option alongside the existing Silver. While the color is a nice touch, the bigger story here is the subtle but important feature upgrades borrowed from Astell&Kern’s flagship SP4000, making the PD10 more competitive in a crowded DAP market that’s seeing strong new offerings from Shanling, FiiO, and iBasso.
The PD10 Black will make its official debut at CanJam SoCal on September 13–14, 2025, and will arrive at authorized U.S. dealers for $2,410 (worldwide pricing: $2,200) later that month. For those who prefer the Silver, a player-only version without the cradle will also be available at the same time.
PD10 Black Brings Flagship SP4000 Features to Astell&Kern’s Innovative DAP

Astell&Kern has long offered a diverse DAP lineup, with each player designed to highlight its own sonic and functional strengths. The PD10 represents a deliberate departure from the existing lineup, marking a bold step forward in product design and engineering. This evolution is immediately apparent in the redesigned volume wheel, which provides a more intuitive and tactile approach to precise volume control while maintaining Astell&Kern’s signature aesthetic.
With the launch of the PD10 Black, Astell&Kern introduces several key features previously exclusive to the flagship A&ultima SP4000, bringing high-end sound quality to a more compact and uniquely styled player. These enhancements, also arriving on the PD10 Silver via a firmware update in September 2025, include:
Full Android OS Integration
In response to the growing shift toward streaming-based music consumption, the PD10 now offers full Android OS support, allowing users to install any app via the Google Play Store. Astell&Kern addresses Android OS’s native sampling limitations (SRC) through its proprietary ADP (Astell&Kern Direct Path) technology, enabling bit-perfect, lossless playback even in streaming scenarios. This ensures that listeners experience flagship-level sound quality without compromise, while also gaining the convenience and versatility of a fully integrated Android environment.
Advanced Digital Audio Remaster (DAR) Technology
Building on technology first introduced in the SP4000, the PD10 now incorporates Advanced DAR, Astell&Kern’s second-generation Digital Audio Remaster engine. This system delivers sound that is more natural and refined through a two-stage processing approach. First, the VSE (Virtual Sound Extender) restores harmonics that may have been lost during recording or compression, enriching the audio at the earliest stage. Next, the advanced DAR engine performs precision upsampling, refining detail and completeness. This combination results in deeper, more immersive sound that brings listeners closer to the original recording than ever before.
4.5 Generation Graphic User Interface
The PD10 introduces an upgraded 4.5 Generation Graphic User Interface (GUI), first seen in the SP4000, designed to balance functionality with emotional engagement. The main screen features an immersive animation where an LP appears to slide in and out as you swipe through albums, transforming music selection into a visually engaging and tactile experience.
The interface continues to showcase Astell&Kern’s signature Crimson Theme, combining a refined, modern design with the brand’s distinct emotional sensibility. Graphics remain simple and unintrusive, emphasizing usability and intuitiveness. Guided by three design principles—Edge, Simple, and Sensibility—the interface improves clarity and operational efficiency while maintaining AK’s unique style. The black-and-red color palette is optimized to reduce eye fatigue, conserve battery life, and minimize heat generation during extended use.
Qobuz Connect
With the September 2025 firmware update, the PD10 will add official support for Qobuz Connect, allowing users to control Hi-Fi music directly from the Qobuz app. This eliminates the need to juggle remotes or switch between devices, enabling seamless transitions from headphones to your Hi-Fi system or between mobile and desktop apps.
Qobuz Connect is compatible with a wide range of Hi-Fi equipment, providing access to the full Qobuz experience, including streaming at up to 24-bit/192 kHz, along with all the platform’s features and magazine content. Designed for simplicity and convenience, it allows listeners to focus on the music: just launch Qobuz, press play, and enjoy high-resolution audio with minimal friction.
What Makes the PD10 DAP Unique?

Complete Separation of Digital and Analog Signals with HEXA-Audio Circuitry
The PD10 incorporates the HEXA audio circuit design, originally developed for Astell&Kern’s SP3000. This design utilizes four AKM AK4498EX DACs alongside two separate AK4191EQ chips dedicated to handling digital signals. The PD10 is the first DAP to integrate the newly released AK4498EX DAC.
Unlike most digital players, which process digital and analog signals together within the DAC, the PD10’s HEXA structure physically separates these processes. The AK4191EQ chips handle digital signals independently, while the AK4498EX DACs process analog signals separately. This separation minimizes noise interference and allows for clearer and more precise audio reproduction.
Independent Dual Audio Circuits
To enhance performance for both unbalanced and balanced outputs, the PD10 features two independent audio circuits. Most other DAPs share a single DAC for both outputs, requiring a signal switch that can limit signal range and reduce audio fidelity. By separating the circuits, Astell&Kern ensures that audio performance is optimized regardless of the output used.
Impedance-Adaptive Dual Amplifiers
The PD10 includes two distinct amplifiers designed for different listening scenarios. Each amplifier is tuned based on the typical impedance of connected headphones or earphones:
- Normal Gain AMP – Optimized for low-to-medium impedance devices, delivering accurate reproduction of fine details and a clean, balanced sound.
- High Gain AMP – Designed for high-impedance or more demanding headphones, providing greater dynamic range and clarity for complex audio passages.
This dual-amp configuration allows users to select the amplifier that best matches their equipment, ensuring consistent performance across a wide range of listening setups.
Smart Gain – Automatic Amplifier Matching
The PD10 features Smart Gain, which automatically detects the impedance of connected headphones or earphones and selects the appropriate amplifier. Devices with an impedance of 32 Ω or less are assigned to the Normal Gain AMP, providing up to 5.5 Vrms on balanced output, while devices above 32 Ω are routed to the High Gain AMP, delivering up to 8.3 Vrms. This ensures optimal performance without requiring manual adjustment, allowing users to connect a wide variety of headphones with minimal setup.
Storage, Connectivity, and Display
The PD10 includes 256 GB of internal memory with microSD support up to 2 TB. Connectivity options include dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, DLNA networking, USB digital audio output, and USB-C for data transfer and charging. The player can also function as an external DAC via Bluetooth or a direct USB connection to Mac or Windows PCs.
A 6-inch Full HD (1080×2160) touch screen provides a high-resolution display, and a LED ring around the power button indicates the bit-rate of the currently playing track. Supported formats include high-resolution PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD512, with ReplayGain providing consistent playback volume across tracks.
Wireless and Bluetooth Capabilities
The PD10 supports AK File Drop, enabling wireless music file transfer from PCs, smartphones, or FTP programs on the same network. AirPlay allows music sharing and control from Apple devices. Bluetooth 5.3 compatibility includes aptX HD, LHDC, and LDAC, offering multiple options for high-resolution audio streaming. The BT Sink function allows the PD10 to receive audio from external devices, functioning as a high-quality Bluetooth DAC.
Power and Battery
With Power Delivery 3.0 (PD 3.0) support, the PD10 charges more efficiently, reaching a full charge in approximately 3.5 hours. Its 5,770 mAh battery supports up to 15 hours of continuous playback with optimized circuitry, maintaining extended listening even with the larger display and upgraded performance.
Crossfeed and Roon Compatibility
The PD10 includes a Crossfeed feature that mixes portions of one channel into the other with a time delay, creating a headphone listening experience that mimics speaker playback in a room. Users can fine-tune the effect with Shelf Cutoff, Shelf Gain, and Mixer Level settings. The player is also Roon Ready certified.
Design and User Interface
The PD10 follows the “Contrast Cube” design concept, combining stainless steel and glass to create a minimalist yet refined aesthetic. The interface prioritizes one-handed operation with intuitive button controls, replacing the traditional volume wheel with distinct control buttons for a cleaner look. Material contrasts highlight the controls while maintaining a simple and functional design.
The overall construction and finish demonstrate Astell&Kern’s attention to craftsmanship and material quality, ensuring the PD10 not only delivers high-performance audio but also maintains a visually refined and user-friendly design.
The Bottom Line
Astell&Kern’s PD10 Black isn’t just about looking sleek in a new shade of black—though it does that fairly well. The real story is the feature upgrades borrowed from the SP4000, including full Android OS integration with ADP for bit-perfect streaming, Advanced DAR, independent dual audio circuits, Smart Gain amplifier matching, Crossfeed, and Qobuz Connect. These improvements make the PD10 a more versatile and competitive high-resolution DAP, capable of standing up to new models from Shanling, FiiO, and iBasso. The Black color is just icing on the cake—useful for Instagram, but it’s the sound and tech refinements that truly matter here.
