Set it up, forget about it, and let it disappear into your day—precisely what Cambridge Audio wants. No sonic fireworks. Just solid performance, long-term satisfaction, and none of the nervosa.
With the Q Acoustics 3020c, it’s a lovely balance—easy to drive, sonically composed, and tonally even. A small-space killer. Add a decent streamer or DAC, and you’re well into hi-fi without triggering a midlife crisis.
The Wharfedale EVO 5.1 and Denton 85 step things up a notch in terms of body and warmth. The MXW70 holds its own, but let’s not pretend it’s swinging Thor’s hammer here. Ian, Thanks for this detailed overview of Cambridge’s entries into more affordable gear using Class D typology. I also appreciate the discussion of how well they pair with various speakers (!). It really is the Golden Age of audio, especially for those of us who are NOT blessed with gobs of cash to burn. I did have the Cambridge Dac Magic 200M, but!! Headphones just make the tinnitus scream. So, I gave that with the Focal headphones to someone who would happily use both. That said, it’s an exciting time to see what amps arise for those of us of modest means and modest backs.

Products like the CA amplifier offer those of us who don’t have a lot of physical space a real alternative that isn’t overpriced.
I’m likely to spring for two of them as I’m hoping to build a system with the Super Denton for my master bedroom and the tonal match might be perfect and they thrive with more power. Just figuring out the preamp as I have 3 sources.

Depends on the rest of the system. I’ve owned an Edge A since it was introduced and it is the best piece of kit that I own.
What will you be using the amplifiers with and that also includes sources.
The Edge A can drive very difficult loads and that includes large planar speakers and electrostatic models.
The £2500 price is less than 1/2 of what I paid, so that’s a helluva good deal.

If you go with the two smaller class D amplifiers, what would they be connected to?
I have an MXN10 and CXN100. The “balanced” mono block route is very appealing, but that still leaves me without any analog inputs — and that doesn’t work for me long-term if I want to add a turntable/phono preamp.
Cambridge should have designed a similarly sized preamp with a DAC and multiple analog inputs and subwoofer output.

Oracle Delphi / FR 64 ( black ) Denon 103 ( Le Son modified – amazing ) Tisbury Audio Domino, WiiM Ultra as preamp / streamer, Quad 405-2 into PSB Image T54 ( can’t believe how good these are )
The 405-2 is now 42 years old, refurbed by Quad last year and working nicely but time for an upgrade ?
Think it’s got to be Edge A or maybe Edge W ( £1500 refurbed ) with Ultra as preamp as it is now.

The WiiM/Edge W could certainly work as long as you think there are enough inputs for your sources.
I’ve owned a few pairs of PSB over the years, so I’m familiar with the tonal balance.
They will benefit from more power and control in the low end.
My only caveat is that the WiiM will sound thinner and cooler than the Edge A or Edge W. I have an Ultra as well running into the Edge A and NAD 316BEE V2 and it’s more analytical sounding than my two Cambridge network players.
I did use the Edge A with the PSB Synchrony B600 and it worked well.

Parasound has been in the half-width game for a long long time, and still are with an amp, preamp and phono preamp. All 3 units for $1000 and still quite the Swiss army knife. Use to you could choose silver or black. Today only black. They scrapped the CD player long long ago.

Didn’t Marantz do a series like this in the early 90s. Music Link series I think? Similar style,nicer (imo), all small desktop friendly units. But they had monoblocks, CD player, phono eq, Dac (digital audio controller), and the very hard to come by DPS-1 (Digital power supply) all which had the dedicated rack for all the units to sit on. It would be cool if Cambridge went a similar way with more units like that.

Marantz should definitely revisit that. Especially with the popularity of the M1 Streaming Amplifier. They could add a dedicated phono stage and headphone amplifier and design a rack for it. I like the idea.
