Recklessness is Often Seen Failure to Properly Protect Hard Drive

When we think about the benefits our computers have afforded us one of the most common attributes for which they are credited is their ability to complete a number of tasks within a short period of time. Because we have grown so accustomed to utilizing our computers for these tasks they seem to have become more of a necessity than a luxury.

While computers have played a significant role in our day-to-day life the reliance on these systems can produce results that are not always desired. Of course this is usually due to our reckless attitude when it comes to the health of our computers.

That recklessness is often seen in our failure to properly protect the hard drive from potentially devastating issues. We may install software like anti-virus protection and spam blockers as a means of defense but the truth is our computers need more than just that if they are to continue to operate at their peak level.

One of the biggest health risks that affects our hard drive and slows the speed of its performance is the computer disease known as fragmentation. This often overlooked disease carries the potential to not only cause frustrating slowdowns but ultimately lead to the crash of the hard drive.

Fragmentation is caused by the very nature in which a hard drive is designed. Because a hard drive saves and stores files in a contiguous manner we run into problems when we want to modify and existing file. When we recall one of these files and make changes and then try to resave it the file will no longer fit in its original space. The hard drive’s answer is to cut the excess information and store it in the next available space; this is now a fragmented file.

Because there is no limit to how many times a single file can be fragmented the hard drive can be littered with thousands of pieces belonging to one file. As the hard drive becomes inundated with fragmented files it becomes more and more difficult for it to complete simple tasks. This is because the hard drive is forced to search for all the pieces that belong to a file, causing the delays that most of us have experienced at least once.

It is those delays that start to drive us crazy. At one time we were able to complete all those tasks in a matter of a few clicks but once fragmentation becomes a problem those clicks are followed by long delays as the hard drive is forced to work overtime.

There are plenty of warning signs that we can look for to catch fragmentation before it becomes a major problem. Because fragmentation attacks the hard drive’s speed we need to pay attention to how quickly our computer responds to our requests. If it is taking a long time to boot up your computer, if you’re having trouble loading and accessing pages or files, if your Internet browsing is sluggish, or if retrieving and sending email has become a problem then chances are your hard drive needs help.

That help comes in the form of defragmentation software. By installing defragmentation software on your hard drive you can effectively wipe out the problem of fragmentation and prevent a re-occurrence of the disease.

Once installed defrag instantly sweeps the hard drive and searches for files that have been fragmented. Defrag will piece together the files that have become fragmented and then save them as a single file in one space, making it easier for your hard drive to locate and thus improving the speed of the computer.

Not only will defragmentation software repair the hard drive but it will continue to monitor your computer to ensure those dangerous files don’t return.
