Boingo Brings Wi-Fi Connections to Mac and iPhone Users

541168.jpg

Boingo Wireless continues to broaden its support for the Apple platform on all levels, first with Boingo software for the Macintosh and now with its recent introduction of Boingo Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch.

With the Boingo laptop software, the Mac community has a convenient and affordable way to access Boingo Wi-Fi at more than 100,000 hotspots worldwide. The software simplifies the process of logging in to Wi-Fi hotspots, and is a great tool for people who want high-speed Internet without the hassle of searching for coverage, memorizing multiple usernames and passwords, and paying different Wi-Fi providers at various locations.

The introduction of the Boingo Wireless application in the iTunes App Store complements the built-in Wi-Fi capability on the iPhone and iPod Touch. With a Boingo Mobile account, iPhone and iPod Touch users can use the new Boingo application to log into more than 100,000 locations around the world; the cost of the Boingo application in the iTunes store is free, while the monthly cost for worldwide access with Boingo Mobile is $7.95 per month.

“The Apple community is made up of early adopters and highly mobile users around the globe. They’re perfect for Boingo — whether they are surfing online with an iPhone or iPod Touch, or sitting in a cafe doing work on their laptops,” said David Hagan, CEO and president, Boingo Wireless. “With Boingo and Boingo Mobile, we are providing the ideal way to get online around the world, helping people get and stay connected when they need to be online, everywhere they want to be.”

According to usage reports from airport Wi-Fi networks operated by Boingo, there has been a steady increase in Wi-Fi connections from MacBooks and PowerBooks. As of January 2008, nearly 20 percent of airport usage comes from Mac laptops, an increase of 30 percent since January 2007.

For the mobile market, in June 2007, the handheld device traffic logging on through Boingo operated airport hotspots was less than 1 percent of all unique visitors. In November 2008, the handheld device traffic was almost 19 percent of all visitors. iPhone and iPod Touch comprise more than 84 percent of those unique handheld device users.
