Audioengine HD4 Next Gen Home Music System in Walnut with Black Grilles Lifestyle

Powered speaker system specialists Audioengine have introduced the latest addition to their lineup: the HD4 Next Gen Music System. Building on the success of the original HD4 released in 2021, the HD4 Next Gen refines and enhances the original design, reinforcing Audioengine’s commitment to high-quality analog audio reproduction, handcrafted craftsmanship, and simple, user-friendly setup.

Designed for seamless connection to turntables and for streaming high-resolution music from your digital library, the HD4 Next Gen delivers full-range sound in a compact form — perfect for desktop setups and personal listening. There are no apps, no passwords, and no learning curve — just plug in your components and start listening.

Featuring analog inputs, a built-in DAC (PCM 5100A) for digital sources, and a dedicated headphone output, the HD4 Next Gen is engineered to deliver the perfect balance of analog warmth and digital convenience.

Amplifiers & Speaker Drivers

The HD4 Next Gen features Class A/B amplifiers that preserve the natural sound signature Audioengine is known for. Each system includes one active and one passive speaker, both equipped with custom aramid fiber woofers and silk dome tweeters, housed in handcrafted real wood cabinets. The result is well-controlled bass, clear mids, and smooth highs, delivering accurate performance across formats from vinyl to Bluetooth.

Pro Tip: All amplification and inputs are located in the active speaker, which connects to the passive speaker using the included speaker cable.

Built-in Headphone Amplifier

In addition to speaker playback, the HD4 Next Gen includes a built-in headphone amplifier (OPA1602) designed to drive high-impedance headphones and in-ear monitors with clarity. Whether using speakers or headphones, the HD4 Next Gen offers a practical and versatile desktop audio solution.

Wireless Streaming with Bluetooth aptX Adaptive

Now equipped with Bluetooth 5.3 and aptX Adaptive, the HD4 Next Gen supports high-resolution 24-bit audio streaming while maintaining a stable connection. AptX Adaptive dynamically adjusts bit rates in real time to minimize dropouts and maintain consistent sound quality. Compared to standard Bluetooth codecs, it automatically optimizes performance based on the listening environment. The HD4 Next Gen offers a Bluetooth range of up to 100 feet, depending on conditions.

Connectivity

For users who want to add low-end extension, the HD4 Next Gen allows connection of a subwoofer video the RCA analog outputs. Audioengine recommends pairing it with their S6 or S8 subwoofers, but any powered subwoofer can be connected.

Build Quality

In line with Audioengine’s design approach, the HD4 Next Gen is built with quality materials and careful engineering. Its real wood cabinets, custom drivers, and analog amplifiers are intended to deliver detailed sound in a compact, simplified system.

Custom Finishes

The HD4 Next Gen Home Music System is available in Satin Black, Real Walnut Veneer, and Hi-Gloss Piano White. Each unit is handcrafted and finished using a detailed 13-step process, ensuring a high-quality, visually refined product that matches its audio performance.

The Bottom Line

Audioengine continues its reputation for delivering reliable, high-quality wireless powered speakers with the HD4 Next Gen, offering impressive sound and versatile connectivity at a price under $450. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.3 and aptX Adaptive enhances its wireless performance, while USB Type-C connectivity allows direct connection to smartphones.

However, the absence of HDMI-ARC limits its convenience for TV audio integration. Also, HD4 Next Gen does not have an internal MM phono pre-amp, which means that you will need to use a turntable with its own or an external phono preamp between the turntable and the HD4 Next Gen’s analog inputs.

Despite the above connection omissions, the HD4 Next Gen remains a strong option for those seeking excellent desktop audio in a compact, user-friendly package.
