Today on April 25, 2025 Shure celebrates the company’s 100th Anniversary, and we take a deep dive into the company’s 100 year history with resident historian, and nearly longest tenured employee (since 1976), Michael Pettersen.
Michael recounts the various jobs he held, company milestones, as well as his time that intersected with its founder, Sidney N. Shure and his wife who inherited the company after his passing.
From humble beginnings selling radio parts in Chicago, Shure is both an American entrepreneurial success story and an innovator in sound reproduction. The company built its reputation on high quality and reliability — two tenets which hold true to this day.
Shure is best known for their microphones. In fact, their mics have become so iconic that when we think of a microphone, it’s most likely a Shure. Perhaps the most famous — the 55S — popularized by Elvis Presley and later became commonly known as the “Elvis mic”. In addition, Johnny Carson, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Martin Luther King Jr. and every U.S. President since 1965 have relied on Shure.
Shure remains a private company, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
