Amazon’s IMDb TV Changes Name to Freevee

Amazon is changing the name of its IMDb TV free ad-supported streaming service to Freevee. Find out what you need to know.

Amazon Freevee Logo

Amazon Prime Video is one of the most popular subscription streaming services with about 150+ million subscribers, making it second behind Netflix’s 220+ million.

However, Amazon also owns a free ad-supported streaming service, that doesn’t require Prime membership: IMDb TV

IMDb TV Ad-supported Content Selection

As a free ad-supported service, IMDb TV features mostly older movies and TV series and movies, but also provides some documentaries, celebrity interviews, and limited original content.

It’s not the same app as Amazon Prime Video but is included as a category within Amazon Prime Video and is also available as a separate free app on select streaming devices including:

  • Fire TV
  • Echo Show
  • Android TV
  • Google TV
  • LG Smart TVs
  • Sony PS4/5
  • Roku (Devices and Roku TVs)
  • Samsung Smart TVs
  • Xbox
  • Xfinity
  • iOS (Apple App Store)
  • Android (Google Play Store)

IMDb TV Name Change To Freevee

IMDb TV is becoming Freevee

As of April 27th, 2022, IMDb TV will become Freevee.

Amazon feels that the new name helps to better reflect the free nature of its service and better distinguish it from the regular IMDb website, which emphasizes movie and related entertainment news as well as providing a historical archive of actor biographies, filmography’s,  and movie production history.

In addition to the name change, Amazon states that it will be increasing the amount of original programming shown on Freevee by as much as 70%.

Some current and forthcoming original content includes:

Full details on the above content plus original movies and unscripted content are expected to be revealed on May 2, 2022 at the NewFronts presentation.

In addition to the name change, it’s also possible that there may be some changes in how content is categorized, displayed, and navigated, although that has not been indicated in the information released so far.

There is also the possibility that Freevee could be sold, but once again, this has not been indicated, and knowing Amazon, that would probably not happen if Freevee is able to compete well with similar free ad-supported streaming services. The success of original programming might end up being the determining factor.
