Which is the best digital format to use to convert hi8mm to digtal?

Anonymous
I have some 40 hours of hi8mm video that I carry with me as I travel. I am trying to decide what is the best digtal format to use to convert. I have considered the panasonic showstopper with a 30 hour hard disk drive, but I cannot determine the quality. Is there a dvd recorder that is compatable with most dvd players and laptops? How about the terapin video cd recorder? I want to be able to preserve and transport this video. I want the digital medium to be of the best quality and work in most players. I am confused. Thank you for your time.

I am also in the process of transferring hi8mm and vhs to a digital format. I thought the best way was to transfer these directly from hi8mm to dvd, but have read that the best way to do this is to transfer your 8mm tapes directly to a digital tape source such as mini dv and use that as your master, then go from that to dvd. Go to this site for more information. Film-to-video.com

if you get a new digital 8 camera you can play the old hi8 tapes and connect to the computer in firewire. you will need a firewire card in your computer. my new sony dig8 came with all the software to do this. i can edit and save to a file as an mpeg. i then use nero burning rom to burn the file to s-video cd. s-video cd's look like dvd. and they play in most home dvd players!

Generic answer to all:

Connect the analog output of your Hi8 camera to the analog inputs of your DVD recorder. The recorder will digitize the signal and record it to DVD (or to the recorder's internal HDD, if it has one and that's what you prefer).

If you want to do extensive editing of the video on a computer, you need to convert the analog video signal to digital and send it to the computer. There are converters for that purpose (e.g. Dazzle, Canopus, and others), and at least some, if not all, Sony Digital8 cameras will do it. If your computer doesn't have the necessary input to match the converting device (e.g., Firewire or USB2), you'll have to buy a card of some kind and install it in the computer (usually a PCI card for desktop machines, and a PC card for laptops). You also need some kind of software to capture the video signal and then edit it (e.g., iMovie on a Mac). Then you need software that will actually record the edited video onto a DVD (e.g., iDVD on a Mac), as well as a DVD drive capable of recording.

If you need specific answers about specific pieces of equipment, please contact that equipment's manufacturer for the best answer, or use Google to search out user-written reviews.
