Laptop DVI Out into Philips DVI in. HDTV??? Anyone?

I have a laptop with a DVI-D out port for connecting to outside screens. I have a Philips 51" Projection TV with a DVI port in the back. Is that for HDTV? I tried a DVI cable from the laptop to the TV and it did not get detecteed. Do I need anything else? Special cable? Special setup? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Cheers!
