Audio out on Sony KDF-42WE655

I bought a Sony KDF-42WE655 from Good Guys about 3 weeks ago. It has been working great so far. However, today I bought a home theater and am trying to connect the TV output to the AUX of the home theater. The manual says the TV's speakers have to be 'OFF' for the output jacks to work. I tried everything - from turning down the volume to zero, to disabling the speaker from the menu. Not even a hiss is being picked up by the home theater! Is there anything I am missing, or I have a faulty TV/Home theater?

The lamp stories are scary enough for me ;-)

Yes the speaker have to be turned off in the menu for the output jacks to work.

Did you turn the volume back up on the set after turning off the speakers?

Yep..did that too.

I also verified this morning that the home theater AUX works just fine - I connected the Audio out of my Sony Camcorder to it, and was able to hear the sound quite well while playing the tape!

Last thing to do before calling for repair is to double check the the cables are good.

Does GG have a 30 day return policy? You might be able to get them to swap for a new set.

The lamp problems are supposed to be fixed. I've been reading several forums and I haven't seen anything about lamp problems in the current generation of Sony LCD RP sets.

Almost forgot...
The optical out on the WE655 sets only puts out a signal if the set is reciving a Dolby 5.1 program.

Thanks Andrew!

They have a 30 day return policy, and I also bought their $299/2 year replacement warranty. I called GG today, and the 'product specialist' told me that I need to enable the 'analog audio output' from the menu.

I swear - I have seen the menu a lot of times and could not find any setting that says 'analog output'!

I will check for the cable when I go home and will see if I can find that analog setting somewhere..

There isn't an analog output setting. Turning the speakers off enables the analog output. I'm sure this is a common topic for tech support. GG needs to train their product specialists for this issue. Most sets don't work this way.

Sony's engineers made a poor design choice on an otherwise well done user interface. The Grand Wega IV menus are an overall improvment over last years GW III models. In any case it sounds like your set is broken.

Keep us posted. I'd like to know how Good Guys or Sony handles this.

The cables are fine - I gave the output from the DVD player to my stereo system using the same and it works.

The update today is that I have packed up the el-cheapo home theater system that I bought coz it doesnt have an optical in. I will return it today at Fry's and go with an Onkyo HT S770 or likes and see how that works out. Are there any recommendations on a good HT system which can extract the most out of my TV? My budget is around $400.

I am counting on that $299 warranty in case my 30 days are over.

However, I am seeing if I can get an HT on Amazon so that I dont have to shell out 8.5% in tax and get free shipping!

I will keep updating the board :-)

Update: Just finished connecting/configuring Onkyo HT-S770S I bought today from Fry's. I am loving it! Connected my DVD audio via the digital coax and Wega via optical. I had to turn off wega's speakers and was able to receive crystal clear sound from the onkyo. The analog channels produced nothing - which amazes me. So does it mean that when I am channel surfing, I will have to keep turning off Wega's speakers when I hit an HD channel? I dont get it! Is there an 'auto' setting on the Wega where it can just push audio channels to its own speaker? This was a huge turnoff for me today :-(

Well, bottomline, the optical out works as mentioned in the manual. However, the analog output is still something I've no idea about....

>>>The analog channels produced nothing - which amazes me.

The optical output is digital. The set does not contain hardware to convert analog audio to digital. So the optical output doesn't work with analog sources.

The analog line outputs need to be repaird. My bet is your set has a faulty 'A' board.

Hey Andrew! Hope you had a great weekend. I connected the analog out of the TV to the home theater, and this time I made sure I turn the TV volume *real real* high - even with the TV speakers turned off. Surprise! I was able to hear sound of the SD channels as well. I wanted to make sure the 'volume' level for HD (coming via optical) and SD (via the analog jacks) is same, which it was. However, when I turn on the TV speaker, I make sure I turn the volume to something like 3 first.

In short, the issue now is why do I have to run up the TV volume to +40 in order to hear a decent level on the home theater for the SD channels.

For HD it works great, and thank God the volume level stays same when I switch from HD to SD channels. I was thinking the home theater would blow me off the sofa when I hear HD at +40 :-)

How far have you turned up the volume on your HT?
Are you using a Motorola DCT6xxx series DVR?
Motorola DVR homepage

For whatever reason the analog output levels from my KDF-50WE655 are low. I run the volume on my home stereo much higher for the TV than anyother setting.

If you have the Motorola DCT, check the audio compression settings and turn the volume on the DCT all the way up.

I do not have any DVR/Cable box. I have limited basic and the TV is decoding the digital channels that comcast is kind enough to bundle with limited basic.

Will keep experimenting and keep the board posted!
