Hi..I purchased a Samsung HT DM150 all in one home theater system from Bestbuy and about an hour into the movie the DVD player/reciever cuts out (it seems to over heat). I returned that one and got a replacement and it is doing the same thing. I don't have anything sitting on top of the reciever so I don't think I'm blocking any heat release. Is there something I should know about these models and how they set up, or give up, return it and get something else? Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks, Meredith

Did you get a third? If, so did it function properly?

I was about to buy that model, has anyone heard anything new? That really bums me out, horrible.

Mines works properly.

I love it...buy one, mine works fine:

Here is the correct codes to change from Region 2 to Region Free:-

1. Open tray and remove any disks in tray.
2. Close tray.
1. Switch Off Player and Unplug from mains wait 30 seconds (this clears RAM)
2. Reconnect to mains
3. Turn on player with remote.
4. Press ENTER on remote.
5. Press 8, 4, 2, 6, 9. Using keys on remote.
6. Press ENTER on remote. (The tray will open and player will power off and close tray.)
7. Switch on power from remote.
8. Player is now Region Free.

I had the same problem. First DVD I played, about an hour into the movie, the system clicked and the screen went blank. It had locked up! I noticed that it was very hot and that the fan on the back of the unit was not blowing air. After trying several things, I wound up powering off the system and powering it back on. As soon as the system was powered on, the fan came on and the system cooled down in a matter of minutes. We watched the remainder of the movie without incident. The next day, it did the same thing twice more while playing DVD's for my son. Back to Best Buy it went, and I got a replacement. Fortunately they let me exchange just the main unit, I didn't have to bring back the speakers and accessories. Got the 2nd unit home, and immediately hooked it up and played a DVD. Same problem, about 1 hour into the movie. This time the fan would not come on when the unit was power cycled. I stuck a plastic tie wrap in through the fan hole and spun the fan blades. The fan immedietely came to life and cooled the system. I was able to then finish watching the movie. It was late and Best Buy was closed, so I returned it the next day. Got a third unit in return, hooked it up, and all seems fine. It has played several movies to date without incident. I did notice that the 2 faulty units were manufactured in July 2002 and the functional unit was manufactured in August 2002. Maybe they fixed whatever problem it was and the later unit is OK.... I called Samsung Technical help line and they were clueless. Claimed that they have not seen any bulletins or recalls for that item. That sounds like a load of BS to me.

Wrap-up: Now that the system is working properly, I am elated with it. It has all the features I want in a sleek, attractive package and it won't take you broke. Would I buy another one? I don't know. I really like it. Time will tell if the quality holds up. The PITA factor (Pain in the A$$) has me a little perturbed. I should not have needed to make 3 trips to the store to get a quality piece. This should not happen. Where has the legendary Japanese quality gone????

As a follow-up... I would really be mad if I had mail ordered this thing and had to return it twice by mail. If you buy this one, make sure you go to a store that has a good track record and will accept returns if you're not happy. Mailing it back would not be convenient. I was pleasantly surprised at the responsiveness of the Best Buy customer service department. They were very courteous and understanding throughout this ordeal.

Oh, and check the manufacture date on the back of the unit. Let us know here on the forum if you have problems and when your piece was made.

Hi! Thanks for all the responses. As it turns out I returned the second one and then wracked up about $1500 in unexpected expenses so I'm waiting for xmas...I want to get an all in one system that has a separate dvd player and reciever and speakers and try to keep it under $400...can this be done? please email me if you think you've got a good suggestion.

Thanks! Meredith

I purchased mine on 11-30-02 at Best Buy. No problems!, at least not yet. The manufacture date is September 2002. I love it.

I have a problem regarding to this DVD Theater Set (Samsung DM150).

I lived in HK and I bought this DVD Set 1 week ago, and I also bought an optical (TOSLINK) cable to connect my PS2 to this Theater set. However, no matter playing some PS2 games with 5.1ch supported OR playing DVD movie with DTS or Dolby Digital by my PS2, there are only two front speakers working and no 5.1 effect, so I want to ask did anyone get the same problem with me ?????????

p.s. I've already turned on the "Digital Output" feature of my PS2 and choose Aux output to "Digital In" at the Theater set.

Please Help! I purchased the HT-DM150 yesterday from Best Buy and when I play a DVD it sounds and looks great. But, I can't get the system to work with the TV. I can't get any on screen displays or any sound from the speakers from the audio from the TV. I hooked the audio cables to the Left/Right Audio Output on the TV and then into AUX 1 on the DVD. I'm using S-Video for the video hook up. Can anyone help me out? You can email me at commish@mars.drw.net.

Cyrus
For the sound, you should press the "Aux" button to change to Aux 1 mode in order to output the sound correctly.

I bought the DM550 and it works great out of the box. CNET rated the performance as a 9 out of 10. The 550 gives you 300W at the 150W price, which as of last week was $299 - $50 gift card at Best Buy. Grab this quick if you can get that deal, the system sounds great and 4:3 pull down circuitry produces great picture on the component inputs of my 52" HiRes RCA. The only negative is the remote seems a little cheesy, o'well you can't win'm all.

Just bought this DM550 as well and love it. Have a question regarding switching this set from interlaced to progressive. It says while player is in stop mode, hold PSCAN button down for longer than 1 second and this toggles between PSCAN and ISCAN. I do this but I don't see any display showing whether I've switched it or what it's been switched to. Any help on this is appreciated.

Has anyone noticed a problem with the sub on the 550?? I know it is working but it seems to be only passing extremely low signals. There is an obvious dead spot when it comes to the low frequencies. In the store when they were playing a cd it seemed fine. I will have to go back and try my cd and see how it sounds.

I'm looking to buy a Samsung Home Theater but
I don't know witch one to buy. Here the 3 models
I'm looking right now.

Any comments or suggestion will be appreciate.

Thanks !!!

I bought the DM150 12/7 and it was fine through several movies and CD's. But then today it locked up twice after playing CD's for about an hour. The manufacture date was July 2002. Best Buy will swap the main unit so I will do that tomorrow. Other than this problem it is a great system. I might have liked a little more power but our Best Buy didn't have the 550. But it only seems a little under powered on some DVD's. Other's like Lord of the Rings sound really powerfull. I would have bought the 550 for $50 more but I'm happy with the 150. I don't know about setting the progressive scanning.

Just bought the HT DM150 two days ago... I've watched two DVD so far with no problems (including the epic 209 min. "DAS BOOT: Director's Cut"), as well as a couple of hours straight CD music last night. The manufactured date on the back is September 2002.

Its sounds great, setup was a breeze, and so far I'm very happy.

HT-DM150 July 2002
Weak laser:
-Plays all CD's without problem.
-Will only play 2 out of 15 DVD tested.
-Does generate a lot of heat ~120F when case is open, but has not locked up as of yet. It runs cooler when closed due to airflow created by fan.

Overall: excelent when it can read the disc otherwise it is a $300 CD player.

I have the DM150, and I was wondering about opinions on upgrading the speaker wires. How much better does the system sound?

Anonymous
It makes a difference. Get the highest quality you can afford. The sub needs it the most but its cable is built in.

Can't upgrade the Sub Wire which is a bummer.

HI can you make The Samsung HT-DM150 so thet it will play movies from all regions?

Just bought the DM150 from BBY today, works like a charm. am very impressed. I hesitated due to some of the previous problems reported here, but took a chance. Watch my first movie tonight, "attack of the clones", no problems. My build date was sept 02. Only complaint is the design flaw with the SUB, 1) not powered, 2) speaker wire is built in, unable to replace with monster cable or higher gauge wire. Still sub performance was justfine, and there are many options for changing volume of the different speakers, including sub...

If anyone purchased one after christmas, let me know if they're burning out please. Maybe just the early batch was f'd. Thanks....

Do I need to purchase seperate S-video/audio cable in addition to the set?

to activate progressive scan, the movie you are watching has to be fully stopped, meaning, press the stop button twice, once to stop, a second time to stop the whole dvd. it should just have a square on the top left on the screen and not a triangle and square.

Just bought the DM150 yesterday. The thing cuts out after ten minutes of just watching TV! The thing was blazing hot!

Stay away from it until they've worked out the bugs . . . or make sure you buy from an easy-to-return-to store. Otherwise you may have a $300 foot rest.

it also seems you shouldn't purchase a ht-dm150 if it was made july or before.

Anonymous
I purchased a ht-dm150 at Best Buy today; it overheated and the DVD player locked up after 90 minutes of play time. It was built in July 02. Ironic that the folks at Best Buy weren't aware of the problem. The unit was an 'open box' item; I wonder if it was one of the replaced units mentioned above.

Eacoba
I hate to throw a wrench in the works but, the unit I purchased yesterday was manufactured in September 2002. So much for the theory of pre-August units.

I was fortunate; the only reason why I bought it is that it was going for $350 ($CDN) at Safeway (of all places) . . . you Americans may want to swing up here and do your electronics shopping (That would be $200 US) . . . anyway, they allowed me to return it no questions.

But all is not lost . . . I talked with a Home-Theater specialist; apparently, ANY DVD/HT system has got to be well ventilated. That is, it will "blow" if there is not more than 4" on all sides (except the bottom). Further, if you have a cabinet with glass doors . . . you're just sealing in the heat.

Also, many people still pile components on top of each other . . . an obvious no-no. Espcecially when dealing with amps and other heat producing items.

So, heed the warnings of the manual, operate this thing carefully.

And, with the advice of a specialist, I may reconsider re-purchasing.

I purchased a HT-DM150 on 12/26 at Shopko for $300. It played for about 30 minutes before it overheated (the top of the case was quite hot). The manufacture date was July '02.

I removed the two screws which hold the fan cover and set the fan on top of the unit to verify that the fan worked when the unit warmed up (it did). When I put it back together, the fan made a loud clattering noise when it came on again (the blades were hitting the cover). I loosened the screws a bit to stop the noise, and the unit has been performing flawlessly ever since (it was on for 10+ hours one day).

Either the fans are slightly too thick or they were torqued down too tightly when the unit was assembled. If the fan doesn't come on, the unit will overheat!

How is the performance(sound) of the unit? and any set-up tips?

Well I finally had enough of this crap over the holidays. My THIRD Samsung unit fried on me and this time it didn't overheat. It started losing sound while playing DVD's and watching TV. By christmas morning, I got all static coming from the speakers as soon as I turned it on.

I packed the whole thing back in the box and took it back to Best Buy on December 26. I told them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine. I exchanged it for a Pioneer system with a seperate DVD player. It cost me more money, but I finally figured out that you get exactly what you pay for.

this system sucks. i bought one from best buy the first time, and a few days into it, it overheated and died on me. i exchanged it and they gave me one that was already opened because it was the last one. now, after 1 month into it, my speakers dont even work. it has something to do with the internal heat, im sure. reading up on everyone's responses has reaffirmed that this system was really NOT worth it! manufacturer date 6/02. don't waste your money!

I purchased the HT-DM150 last week and have not had any problems, EXCEPT trying to find a Universal remote that will work with the unit. I've tried 2 RCA remote and a Magnanvox remote. None of the samsung code work nor code scanning. Does anyone know of a universal remote or code that will works with the 150??

Thanks

I purchased this unit on Dec 28th and set it up using open-entertainment-stand (open back and front - - - no doors). It has run flawlessly. I know if you use a closed-door entertainment unit or put a VCR on top of it, they may over heat.

Awesome sound (for the money). Watched Star Wars Episode II, amazing base during the astroid chase and explosions. However, I am shopping for a power sub to wake the neighbours.

This is a great unit and great value . . . read the owners-manual . . . it says to provide ventilation.

Great first system. but the remote sucks. No uni-remote works that i could find.

Hi,
i'd like to buy a DM150 or a DM550 samsung system.
I live in france, do you know a shop center on the internet (from US cause in US it's cheaper) which accept an order from france ?
Is it possible to change the zone on this system ?
do you think there is an other problem to use an US system in France ?
thanks to send information by email

DM550 FAN
For $285 it was a steel.
I bought a DM550 at Best Buy. I cannot get the center speaker to work. It will play of pluged to other terminals but not to the center terminal.
Any ideas what causes the other speakers to work and the center on to be silent. I thought I heard poping earlier. Its a 3ohm connection and the others are 6 ohm. Can I route this through the sub?

I like the player. If its a question of repairing I would pay for it.

Player played non stop for 6 hours yesterday and 6 hours the day before. NO COMPLAINTS except for the center speaker.

Regarding comments recommending good ventilation...

I had my unit on an open shelf with nothing underneath or on top. They overheated anyway. There is a real engineering/design problem with this unit for them to have this many bad systems.

There is a ventilation fan on the back of the unit that circulates air and keeps the system cool. It seems to come on and go off as the system temp fluctuates. On the faulty units that I had, the system would heat up and the fan would stop working. That's when the problems started.

While I agree that you should provide good ventilation for the system (which I did), it did not seem to help in my case. After my 3rd faulty system, I gave up. Good luck to you all who are sticking with them.

To the person with the non-working center speaker, I say exchange the unit. There is nothing special you should have to do to get it to work. When playing a DVD recorded with Dolby 5.1 sound, the system automatically switches to the correct setup to use the center speaker.

Is this infamous overheating problem only associated with the DM150 model or also with the DM550 model?

From the discussions here and on other forums, it seems that only the DM150 is affected....which seems rather puzzling as it handles less power than the DM550, and thus less heat is generated. I would imagine that the thermal couples controlling the cooling fans in both models are identically engineered as well.

Interesting....

I have not yet seen any reports of the model 550 being affected either. By the way, what other forums are you following? This is the only one that I was able to find that had this type of information.

Anonymous
I'd also like to know if the 550 model is affected or not. I've been looking to purchase it for a while now - for those of you that have one, where did you find it? Does Best Buy carry it in the stores but not online? I can't seem to find it anywhere online.

I spoke to Samsung USA today about the 550 model and they informed me that it has been discontinued. I also asked if they knew of anyone selling the remaining units but they had no idea.

Hi.... somebody can help me with the code to set my dm150 actually set to region 4 to change it to region 1?

Thanks

Hi Mike!

Try this posted on December 2nd, it worked for Region 4 also:

For those who own a ht-dm150, are the speakers magnetically shielded? Do they cause any interference with the TV's operation? There is no specification as to this information on the product's specs from Samsung.

There is also no info provided on the sub-woofer's diameter size. I would appreciate someone who own's one to post the woofer size (woofer's outline projects out from the sub's side).

-Thanks in advance

Well, since it looks like the 550 no longer exists...

If I go ahead and get a 150, is there anything else I should get/look out for (besides a post-July 2002 manufacture date)? I read somewhere that upgrading the speaker wire would help... what gauge comes with the system, and what would you upgrade to?

Also, for those that have mounted the speakers, do you need to buy a third-party mount or can you mount directly to the wall? Are there cheap wall mounts that anyone can recommend?

Thanks!

DON'T BUY A 150! Spend a few extra $$ and get a component system.

The third unit I had did not overheat. It just quit putting out sound. The MFR date on the 3rd unit I had was August 2002.
Samsung has some real quality issues with this unit and I would recommend against it.

If you DO insist on buying it, I would get it from a local dealer so you can easily return it, and it might be wise to buy the extended warranty. This will give you greater ability to exchange/return bad units past the 30 day window. My 3rd unit failed after the 30 day window had expired on the original purchase. The only reason Best Buy took it back was because I insisted it was a Christmas gift and you have until January 24th to return XMAS items. If you buy from an online retailer and it needs to be returned, you'll be dealing with mailing it back, either to them or to Samsung USA in New Jersey.

If you still want to buy one after all this, here is the information for wall-mounting:

The satellite speakers can be wall-mounted without brackets, but they tilt downward at a 30 degree angle, so you'll need to mount them high on the wall. You will not be able to aim them if you mount them this way. You can also buy universal mount brackets, which will attach to these speakers, and then they can be aimed.

And another thing...

The speaker wire can be upgraded on all the satellites, but the Subwoofer's wire is permanently attached and cannot be replaced without disassembling your Subwoofer, which will void your warranty. With all the above mentioned problems, methinks you will want the warranty...

My ht-dm150 works fine. No problem yet. It's manufactured on Sep 2002

Is there a way to disable macrovision protection on this unit, using some code similar to setting that Region free?

ht-DM 150- I recently purchased this system no problems yet with overheating
I have questions regarding sound set up while i'm playing DVD I cant change the sound settings can this only be done while the disc is stopped. Also i'm curious as to what the region settings do.

Dave
Ordered a replacement dm150 from Best Buy over the Web just after Christmas. Received a unit made in Nov 02 and noticed several changes to the product from the July unit I returned for overheating. The product packaging had been changed/improved, the speakers seemed heavier and the fabric covering had been changed. Most significant was the consistent operation of the cooling fan shortly into playing a DVD. Point is that the cosmetic changes made me think that Samsung had enhanced the product and probably took steps to rectify the overheating problem in the first production units. It's worked flawlessly for a couple weeks now but only time will tell--

I am interested in the ht-dm150 system, and bass performance is a top consideration for me. How good is the dm150's subwoofer? It's crossover is rated at 200 Hz, a rather high frequency....so I was wondering just how well does it 'rumble'?

How would one go about adding a second (powered) subwoofer to the ht-dm150 configuration? I know the dm150 has no sound outputs of any sort, so what type of connection would be required? Also, how would the added subwoofer match in with the sonics of the dm150?

I also just got a 150, manufacture date Nov 02. I played completely through The Matrix, and the player never even got warm to the touch. So maybe they did in fact make some changes to the cooling system.

It should also be noted that I've got the 150 where there is plenty of space on all sides - I think that this is the most important thing you can do.

Hope that helps someone.

A question with the 150, it says digital optical out right? so how do i see some people using it as a digital in, or is it both somehow? please help...also, is there any way of using the 150 with a tv with basic cable and no audio out? like a different way to connect?

does anyone else have a problem with the 150 model shutting of for a second and turning back on. it's weird.

Hey Calvin what's up...thanks for the code...my region now is set to free...it works great....I only have one question....how or where can I check the manufactured date???
Thanks....

My Samsung HT-DM150 is working fine. Date Oct 2002.

The Radio Shack Kameleon Universal Remote works great with this unit. Has a code for Samsung Home Theater.

My unit was manufactured in November of 2002. The TV stand that it sits on is completely open on all four sides and the top, with no other devices that generate heat. I can't imagine I'm having an overheat problem, but it just doesn't seem to work right. What are the symptoms of an over heating consol?

When I'm watching a DVD, the picture will freeze on one frame, then the counter on the DVD Display will start to wigg out. For example, it will go from 2:03, 2:04, 2:05, 2:06, 2:07, then go back to , 2:03 and repeat forever.

The DVD's are brand new with out any noticeable scratches or dust. And it doesn't matter what DVD I put in.

Worst of all, last night, I couldn't get the drive to recognize that a DVD had been put in at all!!!

It's extremely frustrating. Has anyone had any similar symthoms? Should I get my money back, or try exchanging for another device? Would appreciate your input.

Bryan

FYI, it's my unit is a HT-DM150.

I purchased the HT-DM150 just after Christmas. I was a little hesitant about a HTIB (home theatre in a box) but I have been presently suprised with the sound quality (DVD/CD/MP3/FM) and the picture quality (I'm even running through an RF modulator - until I can afford a VEGA) :)

I agree that the functionality of the remote is somewhat comprimised by its design but I can live with that. Now... on to the heat.

I believe my unit was made in Sept 02. The day I brought it home it overheated and shutdown (yay, thermal protection... no frying). However, this was in a cabinet with a closed back, my fault. I moved it onto the floor to test and it shutdown again... upon closer inspection the rear was clogged with all the wires thus preventing the hot air from escaping... my fault. I have since removed the back of my tv cabinet and have located the HT-DM150 on the bottom shelf (heat rises) and made sure that the cooling fan is free of obstructions. Since then, the unit has performed flawlessly through hours of DVD joy and CD/MP3 music. I'm happy... and it only cost me $400 Canadian.

I do have concerns over the design of the unit and it is quite obvious that Samsung's engineers did not thoroughly research their approach to cooling. I have noticed vents on the bottom of the unit... i'm assuming that these are air intakes, perhaps elevating the unit slightly would improve airflow and cooling.

$400 Canadian?....whered did you get that from? I've been able to find it only at radioshack for $500 (in Toronto).

I just got a HT-DM550. It runs and looks great. Very nice sound. It has two problems.

Why do you have to turn the sound past 45 to get a hear anything?

Center speaker is not working?

This may be my fault. My son was attracted by the blue light and pulled it off the shelf and onto the floor. Feel about 2 feet.

Anyone with any ideas let me know. Thanks for the region free advice. Anyone have the samsung repair address and number. The speakers are great
I would love to take it back and get one that wasn't dropped.

Samsung HT-DM150 seems perfect. I have only little problem with my new Back To The Future trilogy. I can't enter to the language menu. It appear for a little moment and than returns to the main menu without allowing my choice. These DVDs works properly on other DVD player. Has anybody similar problem? It is possible to upgrade firmware? Can you help me with it?

Many people here ask - where we can find the manufacture date? I can't find it too. Can you help with it please?

The Manufacture date is printed on the back, right above the Serial Number.

Here is a question that needs answering by audio freaks! :)

I am interested in a connecting a Sony SAWM40 powered subwoofer (8 ohms into 120W RMS) to the DM150 system. Now, the DM150 has no pre-amp outs (line-level), but obviously it has the speaker-level output to its own passive subwoofer (rated at 3 ohms into 70W RMS).

Would I be able to connect the sony sub via this speaker-level out? Is it safe to use the 3 ohm output to feed into a sub rated at 8 ohms?

-Thanks in advance

1-800-sam-sung. yeah my DVD player is very weird, too. i also feel it doesn't look quite as good as a sony progressive scan or panasonic. my unit, sometimes, shuts off for a split second then turns back on, when watching TV or playing xbox. can't figure out why except i need to upgrade my whole home theatre. my opinion, stay away from it, lots of problems, doesn't go very loud because it's only 300 watts. that's good, but not compared to 450-600 watt units like Kenwood, Sony, or Pioneer.

Steve
I got my DM550 at Best Buy for Christmas 249.00
I learned later that the 550 has been discontinued. So far I have viewed at least 6 full length movies with no problems what so ever. The picture and sound are very good. The surround sound is fantastic on this unit. My brother who has about a 3000.00 component system was even impressed with the sound and very much by the surround. I may take the time later to upgrade my speaker wires, except for the sub. The sub wire is fixed to the sub.

To "MJ" I have experienced needing to turn the volume up a bit to hear mainly the dialogue in movies. This generally happens when I'm watching at night and the kids are in bed. It can be hard to adjust the volume down for the effects, but still be able to hear the dialogue. You want to turn the volume all the way up on the center channel "+6" adjust the surround volume to about +4 and I adjusted my sub to +6 also although +4 may be a bit better. At these settings and watching at night I generally need the volume between 30 and 45 to hear dialogue well.

As far as heat goes, as stated I have had no problems so far and my unit is in a cabinet with a closed back. Only one large hole for all the cables to go through. However the way everyone keeps talking about heat I may cut a few more holes along the back of my cabinet behind the dvd player.

The only thing I have not figured out is how to adjust the front right & left speaker volume down. You're supposed to be able to adust the volume on the fronts from -6 to 0. All I have figured out how to do is adjust the balance (on the fronts only) It's no problem to adjust the rear, center and sub from -6 to +6. Anyone have any answers on this?

All in all for the price the sound and picture are excellent.

Have a great day!

I got a HT-DM150 for a present last week and it has been playing great sofar. I have played long movies like Lord o/t Rings extended edition, 3.5 hours, with no problem whatsoever.
I don't think the sound quality is bad at all, it seems to depend on the DVD. I was pleasantly surprised by it.
The person who bought it for me got it at Safeway for 350 canadian dollars (I got the receipt just in case...) which is just over 200 USD.
What a great deal for all the features you get. The only weak part I have found sofar is the remote, it is flimsy and the printing on it is hard to read.
All in all I am very happy with it.

P.S.
My unit is in a reasonably well ventilated area, but I didn't really do anything special about this. In fact, I had my satalite receiver on top of it for the first few days because I needed to re-organize my TV stand and the unit worked fine then too.

i got the HT-DL200P, it sounds superior to the ht-dm150...no problems at all so far

Yeah, I got my DM-150 at Safeway (A Grocery store of all places) in Western Canada (Winnipeg). with their "club" discount and the mail-in rebate: $250 Canadian!!

My system was mfg'd in Sep 2002. no problems. Although I agree; don't use this thing in a closed-door entertainment center.

Great starter system. And to tell you the truth, there isn't much difference between the quality of sound from this system and any $1000 component system.

I cannot wait until I get my Samsung HDTV.

Anonymous
Did anyone here with DM-150 problems purchase the system from Amazon.com? Thanks.

Hi
this is for the guy in Winnipeg:
I bought mine at Safeway too. How did you get the mail-in rebate coupon?

Anonymous
To the other guy from Winnipeg, you'll need Adobe reader . . .

Rebate "coupon" available at:
http://www.samsung.ca:3304/support/efly/rebate/national_HTiB_100_rebate_en.pdf

If you're not from Winnipeg (or Manitoba for that matter), go to:
http://www.samsung.ca:3304/cgi-bin/nasecabc/en/b2c/promotion/main_promotion/promotion.jsp?prod_path=&LoginFlag=NO

and select your province.

Good luck.

We bought a DM150 recently from Best Buy -- it played a full screen format DVD alright, but does not even detect any of our widescreen DVDs. Anyone else have that problem/know how to fix it?

Anonymous
For those that are wanting to watch the movies late at night with the volume leveled (children sleeping, etc.), use the D.R.C. setting.

It stands for Dynamic Range Compression, which is designed to remove the huge variance between action scenes and slow dialogue scenes.

It doesn't mean that it will completely cure the volume difference, but it does help.

NOTE: Remember to press it when the DVD is in, only works on DVDs, and if you stop or go to the Samsung blue screen, you must re-enable it again.

Enjoy!

Bought the system (150) 2 weeks ago after the holidays. In the 2 weeks I have had it, I haven't had 1 problem with it. Other than the subwoofer not being powered, the system is a bargain for the price. The overheating issue seems to have been from the earlier models which I am sure Samsung has corrected with all the returns and whatnot. In any case, definitely check this system out if you don't want to break the bank. Also, the ability to set volume levels for all speakers including the Subwoofer is great. I had a Panasonic prior to this one and no such option was available. The Panasonic model blows compared to the 150...

I was thinking of buying this one but now I am not sure reading these problems. Someone sum up all the problems so I dont have to read all of this and if it is worth it or not. I have my eyes on a couple others but they are more expensive.

To sum up:

Pros:
-Great sound and picture.
-Great options: video switching, progressive scan, slim design, and relatively cheap.

Complaints seen here:
-Tough to find a universal remote, although someone mentioned a Radio Shack brand that work. Personally I tried several "learning" remotes and none really worked.
-The included remote is a not set up real well and a bit difficult to navigate.
-The 150 seems to be a bit underpowered and the higher powered 550 has been discontinued (?). I have the 550 and it's GREAT.
- Subwoofer is not powered and it's hard wired preventing upgrade to, say, Monster cables. In my opinion, the included wires are sufficient and sounds great in my 15 x 20 family room.

BIGGEST PROBLEM: Unit ventiallation. It seems those units manufactured before Aug-Sept '02 have a problem with the cooling fan in the back not coming on thus letting the unit heat up enough to cause it to freeze.

This unit needs to stand alone with nothing on top and no heat sources below in a well ventilated area.

I bought my 550 (July '02 mfr date) at Ultimate Electronics in Utah just before Christmas and last night it froze up after running just about all day (between the kids DVDs, TV watching, and my DVD). I checked to see if the fan was spinning, nope. Tried to "jump start" it with a cable tie. Still didn't turn. I've checked it before, but for some reason last night it wasn't coming on.

Matt
I think it is a great machine and fantastic value for money. Only had it for a week (Currys £300) and everything seems fine so far. Tried the region hack and it works perfectly. The fan on mine starts immediately. Even after 3 or 4 hours use it still feels quite cool to the touch.
On the volume and sound side - It is very loud and has great bass. One thing that concerns me though is that the volume goes up to a counter of 70 then shows max. Still, any louder and I am sure that the sound would be uncomfortable and would probably distort a great deal.
Anyone that needs to check how good this system is just needs to listen to the asteroid scene in episode 2 - unbelievable!
Great picture on the DVD, music sounds a lot better than it should do at that price, mp3's sound OK and VCD playback is very good.
AVE IT!

I had the same exact problem with this unit. We bought it at Best Buy, and while watching a DVD the unit would shut down. The fan wasn't coming on and the unit was overheating. Brought the head unit back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the floor model, which had a functioning fan. Since then we've had no problems. The HT-DM150 is a great setup. Now if I could just get the universal remote to operate it, we'd be all set. THAT piece is heading back to One-For-All for a software update.

Hi. I am in the U.S. and am wondering, once you have reset this unit to no region code will it play a PAL DVD on a U.S. (NTSC) television? Thanks for your help.

Hi. I have a little problem with DM150. I own new adult DVD, but player can't start playing it, because of parental lock (it shows only error message on blue background). My system is not parental locked. I was trying all. Really!Nothing in setup is bad. Other kind of player can play this DVD without any problems. I think, that it is fault of firmware. DM150 is excellent player for me. I need only little update. Has anybody the same problem? It is possible to upgrade firmware? Can you help me please? Who can help me? Thank you very very much!

Hi I have ordered this system and now affraid of the overheating issues and stuff. can someone tell me when your built date was for those with heating issues and for those without heating issues. Thank you all.

Raul
Thanks for the info people. Despite the fear of overheating, I'm thinking about testing this system out. One big question... Can I use my own center channel speaker and front right/left speakers? My speakers are rated at 8 ohms, 10-80W (I think!) They are Infinity speakers. I assume they'll sound better than what the system came with, am I correct?

My DM550 is now giving me problems:

This has been a GREAT unit for the last 2 months until it just started to hiss and screech. I can fix it by tapping the side or back of unit and it's good for a few more hours. All my connections are good and I've determined it's internal and not external. Hate to bring it back cause anything else will be a lot more expensive -and it will be a pain to unhook and box up.
Seems there should be more "compensation" from Samsung than just the option of returning it back to store for your money back since there's been so many problems with these units. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if anyone's got any compensation out of Samsung for their problems.. Thx

matt
I didn't know that it did this (it doesn't say on the specs), but my DM150 happily plays SVCD's! No problems so far.
:)

Very close to buying this unit myself. As far as i can tell the overheating problem is with the US units (shout if i'm wrong). The last note from Matt about playing SVCD's is good. Last point is that from the Samsung UK website the link to DIGI-UK site allows this unit to be purchased for £234 inc VAT with free delivery. That beats Curries and definately makes this a cracking buy (assuming no overheating problems). One question i do have is 'how to connect a PS2 and do you get sound distribution through all the speakers?

stephen thompson
mark s You will get sound out of all the speakers. this can sound fantastic if the game is coded in 5.1 Make sure that the unit from digi-uk is a 150. when I last looked they were selling 140s. however, these might be the same machine with a different code No. You will be made up with this unit. It definately sounds/looks better than my mates £800 sony system.

Mark S
Thanks Stephen. Digi-UK marketing it as a 150 its only the Samsung website that say's a 140.

OOrizzo
the 150 model is not reliable because i've had it since the beginning of november and now february is here and this thing shuts off whenever it feels like it. whether watching a DVD, using the radio, or playing xbox, it just shuts off whenever it feels like. it sounds pretty good but the $300 kenwood receiver is a whole lot better. you get what you pay for rule applies here. DVD player is good but not great, the system is best when used with digital fiber optic, but still isn't as good as kenwood or sony.

Everyone who has had the problem of the abrupt system shutdown ever tried replacing the speaker wires?

Though I do not own Samsung, but sometimes the problem may not be the receiver, but the speaker wires. If you are still using the original (OEM) speaker wires (that came with the system), try replacing them with at least 14 or 16g.

If after changing the wires you still experience the shutdown, then it's definitely the receiver.

Just bought HT-DM150 last night from Best Buy ($308 including tax). Salesman tried to sell me speaker wire. No need since it's included.

To my relief, it was built in Dec 2002. Regardless, I have it situated on top of my TV for ventilation.
Played thru Lord Of The Rings Extended (both disks) with no prob. Fan on my model is screwed on from the outside of the case. Don't know if this is how they fixed the overheating problem.

Thought subwoofer was broken when doing the white noise test. Never heard anything. Did work when I put in a DVD.

Remote wasn't able to detect my Panasonic TV but no big deal. Also too bad there's no macrovision off setting.
Sounds fantastic (Attack of the Clones Asteroid scene)!

Forgot to add:
True it plays SVCD. Even a disk that never worked on my APEX 600-A.

Also played to the end of an overburnt (80min 700MB) MP3.

So far so good.

Raul
I bought the Samsung HT-DM150. I agree the sound is great for the price. I did hook up my own Infinity Center and Front R/L speakers and everything is working fine so far. The picture quality is great, I use the component video outs and I have a 20" Sony Wega. NO problems overheating (Manufacture Date: DEC 2002), though the area is well ventilated and free of clutter. I've played through several 6-8 hours days listening to the radio, watching TV and DVDs with no problems yet.

One annoyance thus far, on DVDs that have multiple angles, the yellow angle icon shows up onscreen and won't go away while watching the movie! It only goes away when there is only one angle to be seen. I've seen it on Armageddon, Grosse Pointe Blank and Tomorrow Never Dies so far. Is there any way to get rid of that? I know these DVDs don't have multiple angles, but it shows on the display menu that they do.

Thanks

Mine work great. Paid $285 shipped. I think Samsung resolved the overheating issues by adding an additional fan in the back (mine was Nov 2002 built i believe). Been playing DVDs, radio, MP3s, digital input, etc and has been great....i was disappointed that the sub wasnt powered (didnt know) but when watching the THX intro scene and sub turned up to about 3-4 it sounds as if its powered. Highly recommend it.

I paid £249.99 (free postage and packaging) for my Samsung HT-DM150 from BE Direct (http://www.be-direct.co.uk). At first I couldn't get any sound out of the centre speaker and then discovered the wire I was using (which came with the machine) had been incorrectly marked (ie. green went to red, and red went to green).

My only problem with the unit is the multi-angle icon automatically appearing. Is there anyway to disable this? I get it appearing through the first chapter of Attack Of The Clones and Unbreakable. It's quite annoying that there doesn't seem to be anyway to switch the feature off.

Is anyone else disappointed with the Prologic 2.
I have the amp connected to my Sky box and the sound is a bit of a letdown after all the good things i had heard about PL2. The effects from the rear speakers are very few and far between.I am using standard phonos for the connection. Would an upgrade make that much difference?

I think that the sound from DVD is top notch however.

Rick
Anyone know what the asthetic differences are between the 550 and 150? I've been looking and it appears that the 150 is silver and black and the 550 is silver? Anyone elaborate on this?

Also, how do you get vcd and svcd to work? It searches for mp3 and says wrong disc format.

I purchased my HT-DM150 in January 2003 and just wanted to respond to a few posts.

My unit was purchased in Canada and has a September production date. For the first two weeks the unit would overheat during DVD/CD playback and shutdown. It would appear that the externally mounted cooling fan was not capable of cooling the unit sufficiently.

I have since removed the rear of my television cabinet and the overheating issues have disappeared. I have since watched ~15 DVD's and the unit has performed flawlessly. I even managed to watch a few of these DVD's at high volume so the unit was certainly working hard... the walls in my 15' x 20' livingroom were shaking during the opening scene in X-MEN with the volume at about 45/60 and the sub volume at 4/6. I've also played countless hours of Halo on the X-BOX. :)

I am however disappointed by Samsung's lack of comment on the overheating issue - they have received many communication attempts from myself. I also received a $100 mail-in rebate with my purchase which Samsung has yet to fulfill - and the alotted 8 weeks have elapsed. This rebate was part of the deciding factor in my purchase, otherwise, I may have looked to HTIB sytems from Sony/Pioneer.

i have a ps2 but when i connect my TOSLink to my ps2 to the digital in i get sound which is only 2ch "Linear PCM"....even though the game is Dolby Digital.....why isn't my ht-dm150 outputting to Dolby Digital?

I may be wrong, but I believe you would have to go into the setup for the unit. I'm at work so I can confirm that... but I do recall seeing some audio related options in the setup menu.

Ernie
Does anyone know whether the DM150 can play RCE (Region Code Enhancement) DVD's after it's been region-hacked? I don't wanna make mine region free and then find out I can't play RCE discs anymore.

I bought a DM150 and soon after I started watching a movie it turnes to black and white, I think it happend due to a mess up while setting the audio pressign the wrong buttons, Does any one knows how to change it back to a color image????

Currently I have a second unit after the first one overheated and turned off. This unit has been fine for 3 months until yesterday it decided to just turn off. The unit was only warm. Also, I am now getting the multi angle icon during some scenes. Mostly we really enjoy the unit. But I'm afraid it is degrading. Every time I check, it is only warm. So I'm not sure of the cause. The manufacture date is July 02. As to the Prologic II question I am very happy with the sound from the back speakers. I have not adjusted them and get plenty of sound from them. Don't forget the Prologic is for sources that are not coded for 5.1 speakers. I have noticed that the sound from the back speakers varies between DVD's. DVD's that are coded for 5.1 control the amount of sound in back unless you tune for more output. I really cannot answer other questions posted above.

i have purchased the ht-dm150 but i have lost the owners manual does anyone know where i can get another one

Hi, I have some 'problems' with the unit: the subwoofer sounds very 'heavy' even if it's set to -6. Can anyone help me how can I make the subwoofer having less bass (I'm interested in any software or hardware solution) to adjust treble and bass more.

Besides these light problems, the unit is great for its price.

Hm, troubles with writing :)

Did ya try taking those neat little RCA cables and plug them into the Audio-outs from your TV and into the corresponding Audio-in (e.g., AUX-1)on the system?

make sure you select AUX-1 using the "AUX" button on your remote.

Also, in most cases, 'owners manuals' are an excellent tool that one could read in order to get this info. Guess what, there are pcitures too!!

matt
I played Charlies Angels (RCE) and also Final Fantasy (RCE) - both worked fine.
great player - plays everything you put in it - sounds great, looks great.
if you haven't watche episode 2 on this player or lotr extended - you haven't lived.

Anyone notice that the shielded center channel isn't quite shielded enough?

Dave
I plan to buy DM150. Is there any way to get audio - line level from device (through SCART)?
Can it play non-standart SVCD - higher bit rate?
Thx

OOrizzo
what do you mean by shielded enough. you can't put it too close to a TV, if so, i should move it cause i have it right on top. the problem with the shutting off case of the dm-150 is some thing inside the unit has to be resoldered. this is what i was told after picking my unit back up from best buy.(a piece of metal was burnt out on my unit) took it back to best buy since samsung gives a 1 year warranty for labor and parts so i didn't have to pay a penny. so for everybody who has this problem, consider sending it to samsung(just the unit, not the speakers) unless you got it at a place where they can send it for you like best buy did for me. had it back for a month now (knocking on wood)and hasn't shut off since being fixed. plays great.

Joe p
Thanks OOrizzo. Mine does not turn back on after the shut down. But it may still be the same problem. I really appreciate your post. I'm sorry that I cannot comment on the other posted questions.

To Doug Treff... I saw that you wrote "Where has the legendary Japanese quality gone???? ", just to correct you, Samsung is not japanese, its korean, Korean products arent nearly high quality as the japanese but the quality of korean products are getting better e.g. Hyundai, although i would never buy one.

Has anyone had the message "locked" when trying to eject a DVD? Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I've insulted the owner's manual till I'm blue in the face. A little help wouldn't hurt my feelings at all. Thanks!

Joe P
When I received my second unit from the store the guy waiting on me was on the phone for quite some time trying to "unlock" the unit. I guess there is some sequence that unlocks it. He had a tough time doing it and I don't know who he was on the phone with. I'm guessing you need to contact the store or Samsung about your problem. My unit has not had this problem in the 3 months I have had it home.

Shazam
For those people who had the receiver/DVD player burn out:

The problem is because the exposed speaker wire is too long and causes the piece to cook. Cut the wire short and the problem will go away. Weird but true.

Shazam
Just to clarify, keep the exposed wire to a minimum. Trim it, cut it, bite it shorter, whatever.

I refurbed a few and determined that this is the problem. I also learned that the CS got wind of the problem and all pieces sold after or around Jan had the exposed wire trimmed.

I heard the new HT-SK6 rocks. Saw it at CES. klipsch speakers with a 500W system. Also comes with the klipsch KSW-10 sub which peaks at 225W.

When someone get the piece in, I'm buying.

Bought my unit(DM150) from bestbuy in US! Got it home took three hours hooking it up (running wires under house and all! Popped in "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" and sat in awe at the great sound and outstanding picture quality! Paid $199 (open box).
Then I got curious and found this thread! Wow mine was made in JULY2002! &^$&^$(&^$ Going back to bestbuy tommorow to return it :O(!
Now onto my question! Does anyone know anything about the HT DL200P? Found this unit on sears.com last night for $249. Does it overheat? anyone had one for awhile? Any problems?
I am In love with the 150 but cant take a chance on it! PLease help i'm looking to buy something tommorow!
And finally! I popped in "BLACK HAWK DOWN" and switched between I-SCAN & P-SCAN for about 30 minutes trying to find a diffrence! Could not tell any diffrence whatsoever! I'm viewing on a 53" Panasonic Widescreen with 1080i and progressive scan capability! Why is progressive scan not inproving the picture quality? Had a Panasonic progressive scan player and i could tell no difference between it and my normal dvd player!
Thanks for everyones time!

Does anybody know how to turn the macrovision off?
i already put the region free code is that enough to have macrovision free?
thank you!!

Joe P
I don't know about the macrovision. I have a new problem. I have a special edition of Fiddler on the Roof that plays in every other DVD player it's been in. But it will not play in my 150. It says wrong disc format. It is region 1 and so that shouldn't be a problem. I cannot imagine why it won't play in the 150. The special features side plays just fine but the movie side just gives that message.
