Subwoofers: Passive or Active?

I'm searching right now for a good home theater system, and have a couple that I am looking at at the momemt. The only big thing that differs between the ones that I'm looking at is the subwoofer. I'm not actually quite sure of the difference between active and passive subs, other than active are powered on their own and passive powered by the amp. Do I lose any quality or response by getting a passive sub over an active sub? What is the big difference?

Thanks for your help.

Ok let me give you the basics. You don't lose anything between passive or active. The only real difference is that Passive gets its power from your receiver whliie Active you have to plug in your subwoofer. So if you have no power plug things in the wall go with passive. If you do then go active. I would choose active because then your receiver has more energy to pump out sound through your other speakers.

The Less work your amp has to do the better! go with Active!
