Not receiving Dolby Digital

Levar
I have a sony HT-6500DP receiver using an opitcal hookup and my movies do not play in Dolby Digital, but instead Prologic. My DVD player shows a Dolby Digital signal. Is there anyone who can help me.
Thanks.

I am going to try, but the HT-6500DP is the model of your home theater system, not the receiver, the receiver should have a separate model number, if you can post that I may be able to be more specific.

You will have some button on your remote and on the receiver that changes the decoder the receiver uses. On my Sony receiver it is the AFD button on the remote and receiver. I assume it's called the same on yours. This is how you tell the receiver to decode Dolby Digital, Dolby ProLogic, Dolby ProLogic II, DTS, or Auto Decode. My Sony doesn't roll to a choice that says Dolby Digital, I have to choose the option AFD Auto, which senses the material coming through and plays it in Dolby Digital 5.1. My receiver also rolls across the LED screen what option is playing after it starts, it will say something like Dolby Digital 3/2.1, which is 5.1.
I typically leave it on AFD Auto for DVD's.

Also make sure you tell the DVD playing what sound to play under the setup menu before playing the movie, older DVD's may just have Dolby Digital 2.1, while other DVD's have Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS options.

Maybe this will help, write back with more specific info if not.

I am currently having the same problem. I've adjusted my dvd player to output DTS and Dolby Digital signals through an optical digital cable and I've set my Kenwood VR-715 to auto detect but Pro-Logic is the only indicator that lights up. The DVD's played also have DTS and Dolby Digital encoding. Lastly, my receiver does encode DTS and Dolby Digital. The LED indicators for either encoding system do not light up during playback. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hello:
I just purchased the Sony HT-DDW750 home theater system and I'm having some trouble with it.
There is hardly any volume from 1 to 30 - while 30 to 40 being
just audible - nice sound 40 up... I have checked the connections and tried
with the settings with no result. This seems to happen just with DOLBY
DIGITAL. DTS sounds great. I like the quality of the system but cannot
explain why there is no audible output in the whole lower half of the volume
spectrum. I am using a digital coaxial connection from my DVD player to the
receiver. Please help!

I'm having the exact same problem with low audio. Awesome sound, but why am I having to crank it up to 40-50+ to get it. The whole lower spectrum isn't showing up!!

Hi, I had the same problem with my stereo, I took it in, and it turned out that it was my dvd player, not m receiver, a chip had shorted out, so I cold not get dts, I sent it away, and a couple of weeks later I got it back and everything worked great. So take it in to the place that you bought it (if it still has warranty) or into an electronics specialist and they can fix it for you. Hope this helps

Hello.

I bought the same home theatre as the 3rd poster above me, a Sony HT-DDW750. What you need to understand is that Dolby Digital outputs a separate sound to 5 speakers is supposed to have a lower decibel level. The separation of the sound is much greater than it is as per say, an audio CD playing from your DVD where the same sound is output to all the speakers to the same level because and audio CD doesn't have the 5 divisions that Dolby Digital is encoded with. My system always runs from the 30-50 sound range (60 being the limit I think? I never got that far up) and I find it to be more then sufficient for my needs.

Hi;

first the obvious stuff.....
Have you changed the settings on the DVD player to output DD?

Is the disk you are using a DD 5.1 disk? If, for example it is DD 2.0, then your sony receiver would automatically decode it in PrologicII. Older movies were often in stereo or dolby stereo, and that is DD 2.0.

Did you go into the DVD menu on the screen and choose DD5.1? As annoying as that is, some vids make you choose how you want the sound output. I just watched star trek wrath of khan and if you did not go into the menu, it would default in 2.0/prologic.

Does your sony receiver make you assign inputs? That is, do you have to tell it that your DVD is hooked up in the optical connection or does it set that automatically? Check your manual.

Hope that helps.
