RCA 36" TV with Dish Network--which Home Theatre System?

We have a 36" RCA Televison that is about three years old. We also have Dish Network. The dish network receiver say EchoStar DV3. We would like to purchase an "in the box" Home Theatre DVD system. How do we determine what would be compatible with our existing television and dish components? Thanks!!

It looks like you probably have the basic DISH 301 receiver. It has S-Video but only one set of audio/video outputs. It would probably be easist to use the audio output of your TV to hook up to HT "in the box". I'm not a fan of these systems but may work for you.

You'll need to upgrade/replace your DISH 301 sat receiver (508 DVR, 510 DVR both of which record sat. prgrams to hard disk) to any other that has Dolby Digital (optical) output.

I would guess with the info you have given that also ANY HT "in the box system would be compatible.

I'm very much a novice at all of this. How much difference will the Dolby Digital make in terms of sound? We probably will not want to record satellite programs to hard disk. Is the benefit of upgrading to a 508 or 510 system worth the cost?

Almost every one who gets a DVR sat receiver really enjoys them and will not like having to go without it. The 508 DVR has about 60 hrs of recording time and the 510 DVR has about 100 hrs or recording time. The 508 DVR is getting phased out for the 510 DVR, but the 510 DVR (and all new DVRs)is subject to NEW Dish DVR/VOD fees (an extra $5 a month) if you don't subscribe to the 150 pack + all the movie channels. The 508/501 DVR are not subject to an extra fee a month. The only difference between the 501/508/510 DVR is the hours of recording space/hard drive.

There's also an older DISH 4900 receiver that has the Dolby Digital output (no DVR). DISH hasn't made this one in a while. eBay would be your best bet in finding one, but you have to be careful buy a sat. receiver from there. DISH won't activate it until all the billing from that account who own it last is paid. You would also need to make sure you don't have DISH PRO stuff for this receiver. If your not sure, go into the menu/install/point dish/check switch and see if it says DISH PRO. DISH PRO switches are fairly new.

There's a difference in Dolby Digital, but how much would depend on your HT gear and speakers. The biggest difference between DD is your REAR speakers have different sound coming from the left and right. Pro Logic blends the REAR speakers together.

This website [http://www.hdtvprimer.com] will also give you many more details about HT terms for a newbie.
