Sorry to ask the silly newbie question, but I've reached the logical end of my (limited) knowledge.

I have a Denon AVR-1505. Here is my issue. When I'm watching TV monitered through the AVR, the sound is fine. When I watch a DVD (connected through optical) the sound is barely audible. If I switch to straight stereo, I get the full volume again but no surround effect. I've read through the owner's manual several times looking for an answer with no luck.

Am I just missing something simple?

Have you gone through the speaker calibration routine?

Yes, several times as I thought I may have done something wrong.

It seems to center around switching from analog to digital since the TV through the receiver is fine.

Check that the receiver is set to "auto detect". Is the DVD player digital audio output connected directly to the receiver?

Also on the DVD setup menu, make sure that digital signals are set to output.
