I am planning on buying a pair of JBL E100's or Athena AS-F2.2's for a solid 2.0 system, but plan on surround when I have the space for it. What should I consider for a reciever and am I going to need an amp to back it up?

I'm just trying to use the speakers to their potential, but if I can get a good reciever for under $500 I'll be ecstatic. I don't know much about home theater amps...

Look at the Pioneer VSX 1016.

So is there no need for an amp?

Is the lack of HDMI support on the 1016 going to hurt me in the future?

I doubt it. HDMI is not set in stone yet.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which pair to buy? I've heard the Athena's sound better but I like the looks of the JBLs a lot better...maybe suggestions on a different pair? Budget is around $600

If your buying speakers on looks your in trouble, only the sound counts. I like Paradigm. http://www.paradigm.com/Website/SiteParadigmProduct/ParadigmProduct.html
