Newbie to this home theater stuff. Have a Sony STR-DG800 receiver with HDMI pass thru. Connected cable box with HDMI to AV receiver and then to TV (with HDMI). Have sound and picture no problem. Now, connected DVD player to AV receiver with component cables and digital audio. No picture or sound. Do I have to output separate component cables to TV as well as the HDMI? Another question. With HDMI pass thru, I have only sound to TV speakers, not to surround in wall speakers. Can this be fixed? Thanks for any help.

thomas, that Sony receiver will not upconvert a component signal to HDMI, so yes you have to use a separate component wire-set to the TV in addition to the HDMI.

Also, you are going to have to connect the cable box's digital audio output to the Sony in order to hear surround on the cable channels.

The Sony's HDMI "pass through" feature means exactly that: it will not process the signal in any way. The HDMI feature is there to act as a HDMI switcher for convenience.
