Connecting a HDTV to a receiver with out component connections

I am trying to connect a Sony HDTV to a older 5.1 Sony receiver. The receiver has has 4 optical in but no component or digital connections. Should I just connect the optical from the cable box, dvd and tv and leave off the video or should I use the composite connections, or buy a new receiver. furtermore, the TV only has one HDMI input which I plan to connect the HD-DVR to. Is it worth it to buy an upscaling dvd player if I also have to buy a HDMI switch?

It is not worth connecting video via composit so with your current situation you would have to leave off video completely.

If you go the route of a new receiver you may hold off until the prices come down for the units with the HDMI switching capabilities.
