Function of S-Video/Component Video inputs/outputs on Receiver and Switching Function

Will somebody please explain what is the function of S-video and component Video inputs/outputs on a receiver and what's the function S-Video switching option on a receiver? What I will miss if I buy a receiver without any S-Video/Component Video input/output(Example is Yamaha HTR5540).and can I connect this receiver to coaxial cable.
