High CPU usage on DVD playback

I have a Chaintech NFV3-250 with an AMD Athalon 64 3200+ a Chaintech G-Force FX5200 with 256 meg.
one 17"flat panel analog hooked to the DVI port, one 19"crt (older Gateway) hooked to the vga port.
Such asystem should breeze through DVD palyback.
However, when I play dvd's I see 50 % cpu usage, and if I try to use clone mode on the monitors (same image on both monitors)cpu usage goes over 90% and medea player keeps droping in and out of full screen mode (I think this is what it does if it can't handle the demand of full screen due to CPU usage). Also, Is it normal for usage to go from 20% to 95% in fairly regular cycles? When I use my WinTV card, I don't get any video on the VGA port in clone mode. In dualview mode (one large desktop on both monitors) things work OK, but 50% cpu still seems high for DVD playback for a Athalon 64 3200+.
Whats the problem?
