I am just about to install a new home cinema in a purpose built extension. The room is a nice shape 16' x 13' and I would like to install in ceiling speakers. I have already purchased infocus projector and a good electric screen but have no clue where to start with cabling, amplifier, speakers etc. Can anyone suggest where and what speaker cable I should install, where I can pick up speakers and what amp to go for. Budget is around £1200 would like a 7.1 system if possible.

Hallo there and how's the weather up north holding out there.

The weather down hear in Bournemouth is spot-on.

Well, well that's some set-up do you what to do it right, or wrong.

Before going any further go to one of the nearest cinemas up there Odeon, UGC, UCI and have a look at the layout behind the screen, ask for a projectionist, as I a former cinema projectionist I have worked for UCI and Warner Village cinemas UK in the past, so a projectionist will be happy to show you behind the screen and then you will have an idea on the layout and how to approach it in a professional way, ask very nicely he may even show you the projection booth, and not many outsiders get to see inside one of them.

As for the video projector how noisy is it going to be, as it will be with cooling fans for the light source, if there is any room behind the home cinema room, itself then knock out a little bit of the wall put up some framing and install glass panel. It's very doable and with the video projector placed out of sight and sounding very quite in the home cinema with a low NC noise criterion.

First of all matching loudspeakers for the front, and placed behind the screen, I say behind the screen, about 1/3 the screen height and the left and right placed just on the outside and the centre channel, placed in the centre position to the screen Therefore the on screen sound will match the image up there on the screen, just like a professional cinema.

But the width and height of the screen is only going to be as big as it due to the throw of the projection image. So if there is another room behind the main home cinema room place it there and the image will increase in size, light is another issue and lifespan due to the hours of use and the light units are very costly when it comes to replacement.

Building a sound stage that's placed at the front at 2 feet in depth therefore there will be plenty of room just to get behind it, imagine two square holes placed left and right, on the sound stage itself and the black masking placed around the edges of the screen, so with the masking placed below the screen you can, flip it up and go underneath it to get to the three screen matching loudspeakers and make changes to them if needed,as for the sub bass it will be placed below the screen beneath the centre channel, this is where they go and you will see the same in a professional cinema site.

Cabling use cable trucking fit to the parts in the room close to the floor around and above skirting board, take the cabling from the AVR to the front matching three-screen channels left centre and right.

For the surround loudspeakers the rule is that for the side and centre back surround they be placed horizontally that is you will need two for each side wall and two for the back wall placed 6feet up from beneath the loudspeaker, and they will need to be aimed downwards to a centre point in the room, and if at all possible, flush to the wall don't use speaker brackets, try and make a wedge shape out of some wood, with the angle fitted to the centre point, if you have some tools like wood cutting ones you're home cinema is going to look nice and neat.

Placement of cable trucking for the surrounds start from going from the AVR to the surrounds go for one that will take as much of the cable that you will be using.

And one more thing if you do have another room behind the main home cinema room, why not place the AVR in there along with the video projector shorted.

You can behind the scenes when putting on a show in the evenings with a professional style to it.

Hope you are taking all this down, as for the AVR 7.1 hunt down the Kenwood Dolby surround-EX dts-ES 6.1

Sub bass the size of room is just 2 feet longer and 3feet wider than my home cinema, and for sub bass I'm using the JBL 4645 THX approved, for you Your home cinema will need, yes a big one and this is it

But with the cost running slim now it's done well, but there are all possibilities.

Sub bass look around for this one and find best price.

so that's that for the time being.

Hope you make the right choices.

If you have any more quotations, don't be afraid to ask me.

P.S. as for placing loudspeakers in the ceiling, psychoacoustics is what you will be playing with, now then, height surround is another kettle of fish, though if you have some money left over placing around 8 in-ceiling height surrounds will, be needed due to the size of the room.http://www.dolby.com/assets/pdf/press_releases/673_mp_pr_0209_Soundelux.pdf

THE CENTER CHANNEL Okay, let's get right to the point. What are your thoughts on the use of the center channel in mixing?

Jung: I mix with five matched speakers, as most engineers do, I think. One thing I mixed with the bass solid in the center channel-I think it was the first big band thing I mixed, the Glenn Miller Project. I walked into a home theatre demonstration at CES where there wasn't a center channel, and they were playing Glenn Miller without the bass in the center. So I'm saying, "Aw, man, we gotta rethink this." I love the bass in the center channel. First of all, most left and right speakers end up in corners, which is horrible for exciting the room. So, of course, you're exciting two corners now while trying to make a phantom channel out of these two speakers. It just makes so much more sense to me to have the bass localized. I think you get a higher-quality bass when you're not feeding the playback room from a corner. And the beauty of it is-I mean, this is a subtlety that I get off on [chuckle]-when you move off-center, the bass doesn't follow you. It stays in the center, and that's something we've never been able to have before.
