Hey guys.

I have an Xbox, 51cm Flat Screen TV, and a Solomon Surround Sound system.

Please see these links for detailed info on specs of each if you need to.

My TV: http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/41abc3a501b4a982273fc0a87f990780/Pro duct/View/G5160

Solomon Surround Sound: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3702%26item%3D51421054 17%26

My question is this:

Can I get 5.1 Surround Sound through this TV if I was playing through Xbox with the equipment I have now?

I know the System and TV are pretty cheap, but I would just like to be able to get surround sound from Xbox.

I am unsure as to whether the TV could support the surround sound.

If not, what packs/accessories/ cables would I need?
If it helps, the TV box says, "DVD and Cable ready" and "component (DVD) video input".

Thanks for your time and help.
Hope I have given enough information. Thanks.

Geoff

Your link for the Solomon Surround Sound doesn't work. Anyway, I have an Xbox and I needed to buy the Xbox A/V Adapter. The adapter has a port for the optical wire that needs to be used and connected to your sound system. Then all you do is go into the Xbox Settings and Enable Dolby Digital.

Thanks for that reply.

How much is the A/V adapter kit and optical wire?

Thanks :-)

The a/v kit is about 19.99. Check circuit city's website for the exact price.

What would you recommend?

Advanced or High Definition pack?

The above item in the link I provided is what I ordered. Do I still need optical fibre cable?

Thanks!

Yes you NEED the optical cable. Do not get the HD pack if your TV is not HD compatible. Get the Advanced Pack. If you get the HD pack you wont have video. I made that mistake and exchanged the HD pack for the Advanced pack.
And get which ever brand you are comfortable with. The microsoft brand pack cost $20 and the optical cable cost $20 for a 3 foot cable made by Acoustic Research.

i purchased this 5.1 surround sound system for my xbox forgetting to check if it was compatible with the xbox and special AV adaptor cable which it is not

the cable for the surround sound system i have has 3 plugs, a orange for the subwoofer, black for the rear and green for the front.

i was wondering if there was a adaptor which could be used to connect these plugs into the xbox optical plug on the xbox AV cable?

Ahhhhhh well..... you either need to get a full AV receiver to do that OR get this:
http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=136&product= 9468&nav=0

which is actually also an AV receiver/decoder... but is a bit compact.

Also, I'd like to add that there is really no difference between the sound quality for a TosLink (Optical) or SPDIF (Coax). The only problem is if the data transmitted is not reaching the other end which can only happen if the distance is too large (Here Coax wins as light based data needs more repeaters in between) for which the solution is:

http://www.trianglecables.com/pof-840.html

The other reason could be an interferance in signal that penetrates the 75 ohm coax (Optical wins here as even though it is inprobable for such a high interferance to effect even a coax cable, optical signal is not bothered with any electro magnetic signal interference).

I have tried probably all the available solutions.... and wasted a lot of money on half baked solutions but let me guide you the right way...

Do not think you will be able to get a poor man's solution to high quality audio/video! You will end up buying a lot of cheaper stuff which does not solve your requirements! In the end you would spend more cash on cheaper stuff than on one good quality solution! Believe me i have been through it :-(

Get a mid range AV receiver and good brand 5.1 or 6.1 speakers.

I have a Yamaha RXV550 AV receiver and Yamaha P240 5.1 speakers with an added Sony center back speaker as the receiver supports 6.1!

I have 1 optical wire (chinese made 1m which provides the same sound quality :-) ) and a coax cable.

I have my coax connected to DVD player for digital 5.1 sound.

I have my optical connected to XboX for digital sound.

Also, My computer is connected to the same system (via some stereo to RCA converters which are very cheap) to the multichannel input and I get 5.1 from my computer too.

My TV is simply connected to the receiver through RCA stereo (Which the receiver humbly upmixes to 6.1) :-) This solution goes for my Tape deck too!

SO you see..... I spent around $600 for the system but It works perfectly fine :-)

You can try a cheaper receiver (Try Panasonic) and cheaper speakers (Sony or Panasonic low range ones) to suit your needs.

Does any company make an XBOX AV pack with the three stereo mini jacks (black, green, orange) as an audio output?
I'll I know is that the XBOX's only digital output (to my knowledge) is optical. Which is stupid, It should be Optical AND Coaxial. That way you have an alternative. Even though optical can go longer distances without losing (or weaking) it's signal. But there should be a 3 stereo mini plug (black, green, orange) to. Which is what 5.1 and 6.1 sound cards on a PC have, the 3 mini plug. I have the Logitech X-620.
