Hi, what are you looking for?

Mads Malmbak

I run the enormously small website www.greenaudioreview.com. I’m Danish, 41, and live with my wife and two kids (6+4). Four years ago, we bid life in Copenhagen a fond farewell and moved north, out among the trees and the birds and the fields. Best thing we ever did. Since we had kids, I’ve carefully managed to steer clear of any semblance of a job. Instead, I’ve sold refurbished lamps and furniture (what oil does to tired teak is as magical as what a SET amp does for my single-driver speakers) and remodeled our house. Two things have always followed me: books and music. I went to University to read books; I became a kind of self-employed idler because time is worth more than money, and time spent listening to music and/or reading, say, Scottish science fiction from the 90s is time well-spent -- and, who knew, having a lot of time with the kids proved to be quite enjoyable… I’m passionate about music but I’m not completely obsessed. I try to keep it balanced. I like vinyl, but I'm not a hoarder. I freely admit: I like the ritual of vinyl, and especially the album format, but the convenience of Roon is gradually taking over. My interest in music is very much about music discovery and Roon does that better than anything. Discovering new albums is one important thing. How great you can make those albums sound on even a modest system that is set up well is another. 'It's all about the music' is not my kind of motto. It is very obviously also about the gear. And I love the gear! I started Green Audio Review because I thought there was an imbalance between chasing the newest audio gadget and the general state of the world. How many decrapifiers, power regenerators, exotic, rare-metal speakers do our music need? I'm interested in simple audio components that make music come alive. I distrust big glossy speakers and those menacing monoblocks. I like efficient speakers with a wood veneer, and I like affordable amps, often with a tube somewhere in the chain. I also feel strangely attracted to active speakers and their sleek efficiency. My hobbies are simple: music, gear, books, pro cycling, food, and the occasional hiking trip.
