Your thoughts on universal remotes and dvd player

Hey there everyone. Thanks for the advice I read on here, for it helps me to deal with what components to get. BUT, I always read what a pain in the "butt" remotes can be. I think I would like to get one of those learning remotes, the kind that have a little screen on them. ANY SUGGESTIONS. I only wanted to spend in the $100 range.

My system I am looking at getting is a Harmon Kardon 325 and probably the pioneer 563 dvd player, because I want to play home recorded dvd's.

ANy thoughts on the remote???
Any thoughts on a DVD player? (keeping in the mid$100)

I have about 20 remotes including one of the touchscreen Sony 2100 (Palm Pilot look remotes) and some of the high-end Universal brand remotes. I have to tell you I have settled on Remotes from Radio Shack.

The Sony can do ANYTHING because it's completely programmable but it's $150. The touchscreen is cool but it's hard to use because the buttons aren't real and the display's contrast isn't that good. It ate through batteries like crazy and is a little big. We wont even talk about some of the ones that are programmable from a PC like the Philips Pronto.

Anyway, this http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F003%5F007%5F000%5F000&product%5Fid=15%2D2103 remote has real buttons, is backlit (VERY IMPORTANT) and is completely programmable. The buttons are big and best of all it only costs $17. I've seen it on sale for $14.

The one I've settled on looks exactly like this http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F003%5F007%5F000%5F000&product%5Fid=15%2D2116 except my version has an RF to IR transmitter. I don't have to point the remote at anything or even be in the room for it to work becuase I have the RF to IR blaster sitting on a table next to my couch. It only cost $50 if you can still find it.

SOME of the cheap backlit Sonys are alright. If you realy want to be cheap, Philips just started selling some non-backlit versions that are VERY thin for between $8 and $30.

See http://www.remotecentral.com.

Hope this helps.

Oh, yeah. The Kameleons are over-rated.
