dan,

The way you conenct depends on the connectivity options your systems provide

The most common way to connect is
Cable Box --> VCR --> TV
If you dont have a VCR, you can connect Cable Box out to TV

Does you TV provide video switching (video 1, video 2 etc)
then you can hook the DVD as your second Video source.

3 colored plugs?
if its red, white and yellow
thats comopsite AV
red/white for stereo (L/R)
yellow for composite video

If you are talking about red, green and blue then thats the component video connectors. That is only for video.

In general there are three ways to interconnect video
1) Composite (YELLOW)
2) S Video (BLACK single plug)
3) Component (RED GREEN AND BLUE)

Audio is connected using stereo analog (RED, WHITE)
or digital (Digital COAX or Optical)

Most DVD players provide a Digital output along with the analog output. However you need a receiver to accept digital audio input.

For yuor situation, I think the best option is to go from cable box to VCR to TV and connect the DVD via a second AV in on the TV.

Hope this helps
