New to home theaters

I am planning to buy a new receiver. I saw one within my budget that says it puts out 100 watts per channel (x5)

For the meantime while I still am not able to buy new speakers what would happen if I plug in my dad's old 120 watt (max) speakers? Does the 100 watt per channel mean I could only plug in speakers up to 100 watts max?

No. You can plug your dad's speakers into it assuming that it has the same connections as the amp. If it doesn't, just strip the wire and make your own. BUT- you don't want to plug in a speaker that is below the amps power output. For example, dont connect a 50W speaker into a 100W amp. You'll send the speaker into the attic. So as long as your speakers can handle the Max Output of the amp, your fine.
