I've got a set of 15 yr old Boston Accoustics A70's and they're still going strong.
I'm looking for pros and cons from all of you on whether to get a completely new 6 speaker surround system w/a $1000 budget or just add a sub and rears to my Bostons.

It depends.... is this for home theater ? I am assuming that this is what you are looking for. The boston A70's are good speakers of old and to get into a quality set of speakers that will sound better than they do for under 1k you will have to look for used speakers most likely. What area are you in ? You can often find very high quality speakers for sale at extremely low prices in the pennysaver or shopper if you have those mags in your area. Check out Wharfedale's new product line... cheap and high quality sound
